I was thinking of getting Intel E6600 Dual Core 2.4GHZ

What AMD chip will be an equivalent to E6600?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ is $40-50 cheaper. Would it out perform above Intel?
 
wow, I heard AMD was more affordable. That's $30 CDN more than the Intel. I know from Newegg, it is only few dollars more
 
The 5600+ is very comparable to the E6600, and you simply wouldn't notice the difference at stock speeds. If you intend to overclock, then go Intel.
 
Actually, you could always go with socket AM2 simply to be able to upgrade to a K10 CPU when they come out. They may come out in September or October.

But, having a socket AM2 instead of AM2+ (which isn't out yet) means the K10 is going to run without HT3. As far as I know anyway.

In the real world the difference between the e6600, AMD5600 and the AMD6000 will be not be noticeable at there stock speeds. It will be give and take between them when comparing them using benchmarks.

 
The closest AMD rival of the E6600 is the X2 6000+, both in terms of performance and price. However, the E6600 outclasses the X2 6000+ in almost every test and even challenges the Athlon 64 FX series.

Moreover, if you want a CPU which runs quieter and cooler the E6600 should be the first choice.

Agreed. Wait a week or two for the intel price drops, and you can probably get an E6750 (2.66 Ghz) or a Q6600 (2.66 Quad) for about the price of an E6600

they're definitely a better deal on the low end; they have a $60 x2 that overclocks to the high 2ghz range and its not uncommon for someone to hit 3ghz. intel simply doesn't have anything that cheap that performs that well, plus when you take into consideration the generally cheaper amd motherboards, well then in that instance it's cheaper (it's what i went with 🙂).

let me quote an anandtech article here...
