I was offered a job, should I take this?

What do yall recommend I do. I'm a full time college student, and I just got out of an interview with North Western Mutual.

They offer:
1. $30,000/year Salary.
2. Free Lunch
3. Free Parking (Downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin)
4. $1,500 in college assistance per year.
5. Repair Computers. Install Software. Repair Xerox machines and install them. Also training is given to me. With this training I will become "dell certified". All the PC's I'll be working with are 3 years old (max), so no old PC's.

Problem:
1. I'm a full time college student, and fear that a full time job will destroy any grades I may have.
2. I'm a roaring unhealthy pc-game-oholic, who plays online every night talking to my "friends" I've known almost a decade with voice chat. I've been doing this for 10 years... and its like a drug and don't know how easy it will be to stop. Usually I play with these guys 8pm-midnight my time..
3. The only "social activity" I participate in is my band. I don't have very many friends and am not a very social person. I see the band once a week for a 2.5 hour time block.

Do I take the job or not? I've never been offered something like this before. It's always been cleaning bathrooms, puke, table busing, changing lightbulbs... and I'm in college for computers and this job is a computer job... not some hard labor job ether. But again... IM IN COLLEGE.... full time nonetheless. For a 19year old to have a job like this and work like this... idk guys... but I am going to school for computers, and I build them for a hobby..

Update: I think I will take the job. If I cannot manage to take full time job plus school, I will take a class or two less. This way, I can finally live on my own, and take responsibility for my life. On top of this, this is the type of company I want to work for when I graduate. I can make a lot more money working here 4 years and then doing what I finish college to do here. The question now is:

Do I call them and thank them for the interview?

....ordinarily I'd say take it, but I'd be weary of your habits.

Also consider what GPA you have, acceptable variations, and how you deal with stressful situations.

Sounds like you need a change in life (also sounds like you might already know this and know what needs to be done). Take the job, cut out the gaming.

If the job cuts into school too much talk to them at that point, maybe they'll consider reducing your hours to work with you if they like you.

What have you got to lose? You seem to have much more to gain.

P.S. Did I mention give up gaming? This will only work if you do that. This also sounds like it could lead into you having a social life and possibly even.....*GASP* a dating life!!! *GASP*

I would take if. If it hurts your schooling enough, you can just quit. This would be a good resume builder if you want to go into that field. I would take it. Hmm... whats more important, your future and financial security, or CS?

Well, the fact that video games ruined the second half of my last semester has made me VERY aware that it is a problem. I've cut back significantly.. and still feel regret not going back to nearly as much time as I used to spend on it. I've already felt the impact..and am going to try insanely hard this semester, but still fear that even though I may not game as much... The job will still use all of that time...

I also fear that if I just "up and quit"... what happens to my health insurance that is first taken off my parents... then makes me responsible.... but then I quit the job.. I still got to pay health insurance right? Or do I get put back on my parents?

I'd like to note: I'm taking 13 credits.. Not 18 or 21. 12 is full time here.

Be back to check thread in about 4-5 hours. Got band practice and these computers to build.

Don't listen to these people. Money will not buy your happiness. Keep gaming and enjoying yourself. You will have a lifetime to get cirrhosis of the liver and anxiety disorders.

How old are you OP?

This sounds like one of those moments where you're scared of standing on your own two feet for fear of falling flat on your face. It's called life.

Joking aside, go with your gut.

haha, those dell certs are hilarous. I have that too 😛...didnt exactly need training, just took a test.

I would say work there part time. 🙂. with your known habits and still in school, enjoy it...graduate first.

Yes it would be a good resume builder.

I had a full time job at 19, 28k a year I thought I was making a ton of money. But I didn't go to college. If I were you I would stay concentrated on completing college and not drawing it out. You only have a few more years of the "easy" life so enjoy it, but don't enjoy it so much that your college stretches out for years and years.

is it me or is that really crappy pay?

$2500 month / 160 hours = roughly $15/hr.

Is $15 worth it? esp when your grades/social life/hobbies/inter personal relationships will most likely suffer?

What are you accomplishing by playing video games? NOTHING. Go outside

Its a hobbie...kinda like going outside.

Yup, that was kinda retarded

Ultimately, all life is worthless since we are all gonna die, so what does staying alive for years accomplish? 😛 Just make the most out of it and have fun!

I remember when I first heard about them from a coworker who had them...good times

Be warned. It's a lot of work managing school full-time and work full-time. I was in a similar position, and while the money is very attractive, you're going to kill for a few days off from it all after a couple of months. I did it for about 8 months, then went to part time at my job.

No, don't take it. The money is, quite frankly, terrible, and a full-time job will kill your grades. Try to find a position on campus or something. For example, a TA position at my university pays about $1400/mo after taxes and requires about 15 hours/week of work (it's slated as 20, but rarely does it take 20 hours to do the work unless you have to grade an exam).

You get $20+/hour as an undergrad being a TA?

Shens? Before taxes you are making some where around $35/hr as a TA?

I made $6 an hour being a lab assistant/tutor/grader (essentially a TA) 🙁. Also made $6 an hour doing IT work at the college too... while damn lab monitors got to sit on their ass and do nothing making us do their job! :|

You build computers as a hobby? Maybe you could just charge people money for your hobby in your spare time?

I'd suggest part-time work. 37+ hours a week is probably don't going to mix well with your schedule.
