I was infected by my first computer virus today...

It sucked for about half an hour, but I fixed it. It was a virus from a document called Rain Man.doc.pif. Has anyone else seen it? Does anyone know how it travels around? The message in the e-mail said something like:

"Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice

See you later. Thanks"

I should have known about it because of the .pif at the end, but I still ran it. I felt so stupid. I don't know whom I got it from. The virus made me unable to run .exe files. I finally found a file that would undo the virus. Have you ever been infected by a computer virus? I guess I'll start using some anti-virus program. 😱

No offense, but if you fell for the "I send you this file in order to have your advice . . ." (not to mention the doc.pif and the fact that you opened an attachment at all) routine then I'm very surprised this is the first time you've been infected.

I've never been infected (knock on wood).

a friend of mine sent me an email with a attachment.. never opened it. ill never open attachments, whether from friends or stranger.., that is unless my friends tell me ahead of time they're going to send me something..

Thanks for the info. The reason I opened it is because I thought it was a speech from someone in my speech class. I don't know everyone's name in the class, I learned a lesson today.

<< btw, what antivirus software were you running jetblack? >>

I wasn't running any at the time. 😱 But I installed and ran AVG. It found the virus and deleted 4 files. According to the website Savij linked, the virus also made some changes in the registry, which AVG didn't repair I guess. I finally found a .inf file to install that fixed my computer. I have to be more careful from now on.

Hmmm.
You received a file that you didn't ask for.
You realized that it wasn't a document but tried opening it anyway.
It was from someone you didn't know.
And you're not running a virus scan program.

You work in my office, don't you.

That is the way I do it too.

you always remember your first.

Mine was monkey stone virus I got from installing a game I got from my friend on my 486. I think the game was either civ 1 or robin hood. robin hood didn't work.
