I was going into Homedepot yesterday ....

and this older guy in the parking lot stopped me, he proceeds to tell me that he tried to go in Homedepot and return a Miter saw, which he had in shopping cart, but they wouldnt let him because he had no reciept and forgot his ID.

He asked me if i would return it for him.

I couldnt figure out if this was some kinda scam he was trying to run on Homedepot so i said no. He asked me what i was going into HD to do, since he saw i had a HD shopping bag, and i told him i was going to exchange some lights i bought.

He is like ill buy them for you if you retun the saw, well this made me even more suspicious. I finally told him no and walked on.

Was i wrong, you think he was doing some shady shifty stuff to scam HD?

No, you were not wrong. It most definately was some kind of scam.

I don't know how shady he really was, but definitely sounds like something was up. Did he mean that he forgot his drivers license? So if he drove he was driving w/o a license? You don't just go to a store and not have both the receipt and ID...

And the offer to buy your lights and everything make him sound pathetic, so I'm assuming he stole (or someone did) the saw (although I don't know who would steal a miter saw...), and wanted to see if HD would take it. Did it look new? Was it in the box?

It may have been legit ... HD won't take a return without a receipt unless you have ID. Maybe the guy just didn't want to go back for his ID.

But it sounds shady ... I wouldn't have done it.

I was at the bank the other day and two guys tried to pull, "Want to buy some good speakers for cheap? We got them free from work" scam on me.

He didnt have a reciept or ID.

The saw was brand new in a the box, the ryobi kind they sell at HD. had to be worth close to 200 bucks

Another thing ...
It seems you can get "blacklisted" by HD and not allowed to return stuff without a receipt anymore???
A guy in front of me in the returns line was turned away when they brought his name/address up on the system and he didn't have a receipt.
Not sure what the issue was.

Ah....the white van speaker scam. Last time these guys approached me, I laughed at them and stated I was familiar with the scam. They got all offended and tried to tell me it really wasn't a scam.

someoen told me they can look up wht, how, many times, and how much u have returned on their system..maybe they check to see if yoru a serial returnist 😛

Let's see would you pay for somebody's stuff just to save a trip home to get your ID?

If it looks like a scam it is.

In fact basically any time a stranger approaches me for anything I assume immediately that they're trying to scam me since 9/10 times I'm right.

What do they do...lure you into the van than throw you in, forcing you to fork over your ATM card and pin number??

Yes they can. That's why they want an ID.
Last time I returned something I got a look at the monitor and saw a whole list of what I had returned. I'm probably close to being a "serial returnist" 🙂 I'm building a large addition on my home, and tend to overbuy cuz I don't want to blow an hour running in for something I've run out of.

Nope. They sell you speakers worth next to nothing for like $50 and tell you they are great speakers. That way, it seems like you're getting a deal when in reality you're just either getting crappy speakers or stolen goods.

even better: they have a set running so you can listen to them, then they give you a "sealed" box. You open them up, hook them up, no sound comes out, and you pull a driver out, to see they have NO MAGNETS. Friend of mine had it happen to him a few years back.

People are way to suspicious (although this case does seem suspect)

Twice I have went shopping with a friends & family dicooount coupon (GAP and Foot Locker ) and decided I didn't want anything.

I offered it to someone looking like they were about to buy a lot of stuff, and both times they looked at me like I was an alien.......reluctantly accepting it......geez, excuse me for trying to save you 30%

one time, I was eating dinner when the doorbell rang and there were a bunch of people with balloons and cameras. They were from the "Prize Patrol", which I have never heard of. They had an oversized check for $10mil, but I knew that a check couldn't be that big, so I slammed the door and never opened it until they left.

People trying to scam me...
