I've had teachers like that but they have been in the minority...don't even remember...usually not shwoing up meant you had to take the final

I had that once, except it was 10. So guess how many I missed? I actually probably would have missed less without a limit being imposed.

basically you had 5 tests and could drop the lowest score.

The last test was technically the final, so if you had an A after test 4 you were done...

Agreed, if we're talking college professors here honesty is generally better than some excuse. Tell your prof the truth and apologize and he will probably show you some leniency.
