I was about to upgrade my CPU but

Well maybe he was a little off, but what can a home user do with 1TF cpu? (in other words what is it/will it be needed for?)

It will never be seen (when I say never I mean, not for a long, long time) in home computing that sort of thing will be reserved for super computers. Trust me, you will be safe in upgrading to a dual core cpu now.

Read the thread on this article please. It is not that powerful of a processor nor was it intended to be. 1 TFlop is not that much.

Yeah, I believe the article stated something about the common user ever seeing the chip but the technologies going into would be seen down the road someday. Like Chrismr said, dont worry about it and go ahead with your upgrade plan.

640k is memory not calculations, and there's no proof Gates ever actually said that. You don't need a teraflop CPU yet, because you have no software that would make it useful. Once the software is there it could be used for many things like realistic physics, better video, distributed computing, encryption/decryption, etc...
