I felt some nostalgia conquering me this weekend and i'm missing the old Final Fantasy games I played so many times in my youth. The games that got me hooked to RPGs and gaming in general. I must have completed Final Fantasy 2 (FF4) at least a couple dozens of time and everytime I wanted to ebat my time. Last game I can remember I was just under 11 hours with a full playthrough.

Then I played Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Simpler game but filled with flavor and epic adventuring.

Then came Final Fantasy 3 (FF6) which became my new favorite and still is.

Last saturday I was with my brother and he just bought a PS4...so I was freaking tempted to get one too so we could play some games online.

But I then saw the Wii U and checked what it could do and what games I could get on the eShop...all those games are there...

So yeah...someone offered me half what thh Wii U is worth for my PS3...tempting.

Well the thing I want is to be able to watch videos and listen to music from my computer to my Wii U, like the PS3 do. I know the PS4 can't do that as of yet but can the Wii U do this?

Other than that, I think it's a sure buy...

Go to flirc.com
PIck up a Raspi, a Flirc Dongle, and the case there.

Then install XBMC on the Raspi to watch movies from your PC (It's OpenELEC to be used with the Raspi if I'm not mistaken)
And get a WiiU.

Comes out to the same price as a PS4 probably but you'll get a dedicated device to watch movies/tv with. You can use whatever remote you want to control it (the Flirc dongle allows this)
and it's a far better interface to watch your movies/TV with

Coming from consoles, I would never use a console to navigate my movie/tv library. But I also have 22TB of movies/TV so that inefficient console organization doesn't work for me. Might work for those with a smaller database but I can't recommend XBMC enough.

That's the cheapest solution I can think of but if it's too complicated for you, I guess just get a PS4 and not a wiiu.

No JRPGs for PS4 or Wii U right now. Closest thing you're going to get is PS3 with Ni no Kuni and Tales series.

You'll have to wait for FF XV, KH III, and Xenoblade.

OP, ff 1-6 are all available on almost all platforms right now (PC, android/ios included). 3 and 4 were redone in 3D. There is no reason to get a WiiU just for that, but sadly like mentioned above, there simply aren't many JRPG's coming out lately. Most are turning into action games with RPG elements.

If you want those, you would be best to get a DS or 3DS.

Xenoblade Chronicles is being released on 3DS, but only for the NEW 3DS...which pisses me off...

The Wii U, like the PS4, cannot play back local video or music. But unlike the PS4, it's $150 cheaper.

I actually ended up liking the Wii U a lot more than I thought I would. It's a great little system. You're guaranteed some great games with it. However, you really do have to like Nintendo games. The system has very limited third party support. Doesn't have any RPGs for it either right now, though Xenoblade Chronicles X is coming sometime in 2015. You'll find retro RPGs as well on the Virtual Console.

If you're on the fence, keep in mind Nintendo still has their refurb deal going on right now. $200 for a Wii U Deluxe with Nintendoland. Sold directly through them. That's how I got mine. Backed by the same warranty and Nintendo is pretty meticulous about the quality of these things.

Yep i'll grab a Wii U after work later. I know someone that works at a local EBGames and he'll try to cut me some deals on stuff since i'll also buy a pro controller and a game or 2.

I'll also keep my PS3 for now for the playback feature and GTA5 + Last of Us that I already own. The PS4 can wait.

I'm not buying a WiiU until the new Zelda comes out. The online is still horrible and rarely do me and my friends have time to get together in one place like we used to when we were younger so I'd only use the WiiU for Zelda.

A bit disappointed when I discovered that the old FF were not available on the Wii U VC...only on the 3DS VC

But no biggie, Golden Sun, Breath of Fire 2, two classics I played a lot when I was younger. I also bought Wind Waker HD just to replay it.

Great buy so far!

Honestly, if nostalgic-style JRPGs are your thing, the 3DS is a MUCH, MUCH better option than any of the next gen systems.

Some truly great 3DS exclusives (new Zelda, Fire Emblem, Bravely Default, etc), plus backwards compatible with ALL the great RPG gems from the DS library (and there are tons).

And, of course, much cheaper. To me, if that's what you're going for, if you don't already have one, the 3DS is exactly what you're looking for.

I'll eventually get a 3DS but I wanted the Wii U too for the couch play and the more casual games. It's a nice change of pace when you're used to heavy gaming on the PC (Witcher 2, DA:I, etc) and to have the option of just sitting down on the couch and play some Mario or Mario Kart and even Zelda.

But yeah the 3DS will be in my hands around christmas, the NES edition look so good!

I had this same opinion until I tried 3D World and Mario Kart. They're pretty dang good... and SSB is freaking awesome.

PS4 is still better. It's a scientific fact.

In any case, yesterday I paid $185+ tax for a new Wii U Deluxe with Mario World 3D by price matching, stacking a Nintendo coupon, using Target's 20% coupon this week (only available to get prior saturday) and redcard. Best deal anybody has ever paid for a new Wii U deluxe bundle that wasn't stolen. Hell, you can resell mario on ebay for about $50 if you want to. You can't use the 20% if you don't have one, but you can get one for $230+tax. Here is exactly how, steps all from slickdeals and I personally confirmed last night.

Following steps will work this week only.

1) Find a local target that has the $300 Wii U deluxe bundle in stock
2) Go to the weeklyad at toysrus.com and note that in-store price on same item is $270. Technically you need to identify a local store that has it in stock for step 3--if Target asks.
3) Go to target, get the console, have them price match. It is unequivocally corporate policy to price match this from toysrus (right from target's web site). Show them the ad. They can find it on their ipad. Doubt they will confirm it is in stock locally, but they might want to.
4) Now you're paying $270 at target, right?
5) Go to slickdeals and find the 10% off nintendo coupon at target. It is still active now. Download the first image (somebody posted their coupon) onto your phone, and after your price match, have target scan the coupon off your phone. All these coupons are identical and have the same part number, so they all work.
6) Now you're paying $243.
7) Use redcard for 5% more off (you should own a redcard anyway).

Alternatively I think target might be selling it for $250 next week, and if it is you may be able to buy now and get a price guarantee to give you back the difference next week if you don't fiddle with price lathing or anything.

This is good to hear. My daughters (8 and 11) and I will be playing those come Christmas time :) and I'm pretty psyched. We completely finished New Super Mario Bros Wii and most of Mario Kart 7. They like the former so much we keep replaying some of the old levels.

How easy is Mario 3d world? Can casual gamers who suck still enjoy it? Can a badass gamer carry them through since it is multiplayer?

I played Mario, had an NES, SNES, and N64 growing up, but I still don't have much nostalgia for Nintendo. I'd have to force myself to play a new Mario game. I kind of wish I had more nostalgia for that stuff. A lot of my friends do and they get excited about that stuff, but I can't seem to care. I did buy a 3DS when they first came out to play Ocarina of Time on, but didn't even get an hour in before thinking this game sucks, wtf, get on with the story already, I know how to shoot a mfing bow, no I don't want to fish!

It starts up pretty easy and gets to maybe around medium-ish difficulty to beat the game. The post-game secret worlds get pretty hard, IIRC. I actually didn't finish them all.

It's very easy to carry less-skilled players, though they will eat into your stockpile of lives if you let them. Even a less skilled player will help you progress, as you can cheese your way through some sequences by having one guy stand in a safe spot while you try to get past it.

One thing I realised: When I bought the original Wii I was more in heavy gaming on the PC. So the Wii didn't saw much playtime and I didn't really liked the more "party and casual" games plus the nunchuk controller annoyed me a lot. So I ended up selling the console and games.

Now that I bought the Wii U I realise my gaming habit have changed and that I now can enjoy the more causal games it offers. 3D mario and Wind Waker HD are now freaking awesome games that I can enjoy lol.

Times are changing and it's good :p

One of the surprising benefits of a Wii U is that it's pretty amenable for use on road trips. It's energy consumption is shockingly low (32w during gameplay I believe, compared to 100+ for PS4/XB1). You can hook it up to a power inverter connected to your car and play off the Gamepad pretty easily.
