Question I want your input on a filthy secret of mine...

There are use cases for it. FG and upscaling are being used to avoid optimizing games, that's why there is so much blow back.

FG and upscaling are being used to compensate for
1) brute-forced inefficient Ray Tracing bling;
2) Unreal Engine 5's issues;
3) Geforces becoming so god damn dependent on single-threaded CPU performance.

I've also noticed that CPU performance increases a lot just by using DLSS without framegen. Google said it was due to the lower resolution requiring fewer draw calls, thus less burden on the CPU. Is that right?

If frame gen and upscaling were purely community efforts, then I would likely whole-heartedly support them, especially if game devs / GPU manufacturers were against them. As opposed to a system whereby new games are being sold for new GPUs as long as you're using this crutch against poor performance.
