So I've got a Gateway 400SD4 laptop. Laptop Info The core logic on the systemboard is Intel 845MZ. Chipset Info The processor that came in it is a P4 Northwood "A" 2.0GHz. CPU Info I'd like to "upgrade" to a Pentium 4-M 2.0GHz CPU. Upgrade CPU Info The reason for the upgrade is to: 1) decrease heat output and 2) quiet the system down. I've limited myself to the 2GHz part due to financial constraints. A 2.2GHz P4-M is almost twice as expensive as the 2GHz part, and it just gets worse the faster the chip is.
Other planned system upgrades are a new 5400RPM hard drive of 100GB or more capacity and I'd also like to pull the DDR200 and replace it with DDR266.
My big issues are:
A. Is that P4-M CPU I listed above going to work? It's got the same pinout, the same multiplier, and the same cache size. The lower Vcore is the big question but there may be other issues I haven't considered.
B. One of the memory sticks is integrated into the system. Does anyone have any idea what it might take to upgrade it? Do these memory sticks get soldered in or is it likely to be an internal SO-DIMM slot that's it's installed in?
C. For some reason Gateway says that I can only install 512MB of memory, but Intel's literature shows that the 845MZ core logic is good for a gig of memory. If it turns out that the internal memory on the laptop is an SO-DIMM, should I try to install a gig of DDR266?
I'm also toying with the idea of trying to upgrade the video card in this thing. I'll have a look at it when I pull it apart later on to see if it's soldered in, but if it turns out that the Mobility Radeon is a plug in module of some kind I'll be pretty excited. I'd love to put an NVidia card in this thing to make it more linux friendly.
Thanks for all the help guys/gals.
