buy a late 80's baby mercedes.. 190D
They came with the 2.5L 5cyl. diesel, there was a turbo version too. I think it was 35/40MPG, and its still a sort of fullsize car.
Plus the 5cyl diesels will run on anything, they're tough as nails.
Or if you have more cash buy a newer TDI VW I guess. they do into the 50's, iirc.
The VW Lupo (which doesnt exist this side of the ocean) does ~80MPG++ from what i remember. tiny though.
