it eats to much gas :| I wonder if you could buy a civic vx/hx and "underclock" the engine to use less gas. (I don't need 100hp. 50 is fine! :p)

just a passing thought

Detune? In theory, yeah, but why not just drive like an old fart, shift at about three grand, and get the same results?

It already does.

I made a seven-hour highway run in my old '93, averaging about 75-80mph the whole way. 42 mpg.

I've tried that, but my operating system isn't compatible with those instructions.

BTW: Lugging an engine is MUCH harder on it than revving it higher. (as long as you don't red line it a lot)

If you managed to detune to the point of noticing a significantly higher MPG average, I would think that the car would be running MUCH too lean, to the point of damaging internals.

Yep, and that was in winter too. 93 LX sedan. City mileage varies, but generally low to mid-30's.

So shift high enough to avoid lugging. :p

I've got a better idea- don't buy a new car and use the money for gas instead.

If your car currently gets 30 mpg,and you spend $2000 on a car that gets 40 mpg, that's only a 10 mpg difference.

$2000 will buy you 667 gallons of gas at $3 a gallon. You could drive over 20,000 miles on that gas.

If you already drive 20,000 miles a year, you currently spend $2000 on gas a year. If you buy a new car that gets 40 mpg for $2000, that will cost you $1500 a year for gas plus the $2000 for the car.

I get currently get 23 mpg, drive ~15,000, buy premium gas:
15,000 / 23 mpg = 652 gallons * $2.70 = $1760.40 per year

If I get 40mpg and can get the cheap stuff:
15,000 / 40 mpg = 375 gallons * $2.50 = $937.5 per year

$1760.40 - $937.50 = $822.90 savings per year.

Ignoring insurance/registration/maintenance costs... roughly 2.5 years to start saving money. Not to mention the saving wear and tear on my new car and I would park anywhere and not have to worry about door dings or break ins.

Spend $3k on a full electric conversion. It'll only get you far enough to commute around town on a single charge, but you can keep your other car for highway travel.
