RAID is a very broad subject, and it's difficult to just tell you about it. You should check out RAID guides and FAQs online. Try www.StorageReview.com and www.TomsHardware.com (have you even tried Anandtech?), or just search for "What is RAID", etc, on Google.com.

And RAID is not only used for speed, but also for redundancy and increased data protection.
