I want to replace my "old" 1080i HDTV with a new one, but...

my CRT HDTV is nice and bright and it seems like the current crop of HDTVs can't match the brightness and black level of the CRTs. Am I wrong? Are there new ones that can match and beat those two important features?

I mainly want a new one because my tv only has two component inputs. All the new devices are hd compatible and it's difficult to watch something in SD on the non-HD sources. I need more inputs

Most new technology TV's will be able to match the brightness the contrast level (or black level) maybe not. Personally I still like CRT based TV's.

I like mine as well. What would you recommend for my dearth of component inputs?

if you need more component inputs, stop by Radioshack and see what they can do for you. Maybe they'll have a box that can switch between a few connections for you.

I've heard good things about the newer Sony Rear-Projection SXRD's like this one:

Sony 50"

with regards to black levels. While it's not as thin as an LCD or Plasma it's a heck of a lot easier to manage then a CRT.

Samsung DLPs are excellent and have excellent black levels. Also the Sony SXRD is decent. Go to www.avsforum.com if you want the best info. I may be holding off because there are some new technologies coming out in January or so (HDMI 1.3).

the LG 30" CRT HDTV has hdmi and 2 component inputs and has a nice picture. I have one now as my bedroom hdtv.

LG "supe slim" model at best buy that i have.

I'm still paranoind about what im going to due in the living room when my rear projection Hitachi 57" goes belly up and i have to buy one of these great new technologies that produce an inferior image....

crt projection or dlp might be your best bet on this if say you just want a bigger one.

crt is a really good technology though. so itll be tough.

i dont think anything relatively cheap flat panel wise will be close. youw ould need at least a 1080p set, and a really good one, maybe an lcos.

Is it a PITA to just unplug 1 set and pluig in the other devices with how your setup is? I have a CRT HD RP that has only 1 HDMI, but the set is on casters, so I just roll it out, unplug 1, and plug in another device's, takes all of 30 seconds maybe. I only use one source at a time so it is a quick and effective fix for me.

If you want to keep the set, and just want more connections, invest an a A/V that features component with switching. I like the Onkyo I have now, and as stated my solutions is not a PITA, or I'd buy a new A/V with multiple HDMI.
