i don't have a sander etc. can i just paint right over the sides? so i need to sand down to the metal? how can i avoid chipping etc.

thx for the help

Go to any paint store and buy Jasco Paint and Epoxy remover Do not get any on skin or in your eyes this stuff works great just brush on a thick coat and in about 15 minutes you scrape of the paint it comes off very easy you can do the sides and top of you case in about a half hour...
Do not use on the plastic fron of your case it will melt it... Then buy a good spray primer and your good to go.

If you can't find the Jasco stuff (great stuff!), just about any paint remover will work. Like Renob suggested, definately want to put a primer coat on first. I think Rust-O-Leum Gray is the best bet. You should wait at least 36 hours after the primer is dry before you put on your top coat. DO NOT USE ANY FORM OF LATEX PAINT!!! You'll get little rust spots all over! Stick with your automotive or industrial type coatings and you'll have a killer custom rig!

Dont go thru the work/mess of taking all the paint off first, and putting primer on, its a waste of money/time. I'd reccomend using those 3M Sanding pads(whatever there called) and lightly sanding it, not down to the metal, just a little bit, then clean it off with alchohol and then spray paint it... I did that to my case and a few others and they came out looking AWESOME. Read the article at 2cooltek.com if you need more info..

ICSVortex thanks for craping on my post I think I might know a little more about the subject then you Im a Painting Contractor.... The way I see it if your going to do it do it right, so Quad you can lightly sand like vortex said and end up with a not very smooth case or you can do it the way I said and end up with a case as smooth as glass it your choice.. Good luck and have fun.

I've used ICSvortex method as well. I just got all the shine out of the paint by sanding, then cleaning with alcohol. I used a high gloss paint from krylon, and it worked fine.

h, btw, don't consider it a "crap" on your post. there are different methods for everything.

you will want to remove the shiny layer of paint on your case otherwise your paint won't stick at all. sanding it works fine, so does using paint remover. in my opinion, the latter will have better results.

Renob, thread crapping only applies to the fs/t forum, where a replier would be hindering the seller from selling his goods. there are always multiple ways of going about and doing things, and nobody is going around attacking anybody. your second post is fine though in defending the method you suggested, ICSVortex just isn't thread crapping.

In my opinion either would work. The existing finish needs to etched / sanded/or removed and prepared for the new finish to bond, just dont use 80 grit to do it 😀 :Q

Do you think they strip autos to the bare metal before they repaint them ?

Renob or someone else knowledgable.

When i go to buy paint for my case what exactly do i ask for? I ideally want something as strong as the beige stuff that is already on it

I do think its thread crapping when he says someones way of doing something is a waist of time and money than implies that it is the wrong way all he had to say was he had another way to do it and not put down my way, so I will call it thread crapping in any forum if I think its thread crapping.
Damocles just go to home depot or your local paint store and tell them what your doing and tell them you want the most high performing paint they have.

Dang, someone didn't have their Fiber One this morning 😉 Personally I sanded, primered, painted, & clearcoated my case and it looks perfect, but it chips more easily than the beige - that's spray paint for you...

It is easy to obtain auto paint from Sherwinn Willaims, just go in and ask. They will probably have to order it from the wharehouse but one week later and you'll be ready. Only go with auto paint or a paint that is made for metal surfaces like rustoleum.

I think powder coating would be a great idea it probly would not cost that much. And yes Blackwob auto paint works REAL nice if you have the right sprayer I used auto paint on my case 4 or 5 coats and sprayed it with a HVLP sprayer { high volume low pressure sprayer} there great for fine finnish work then put on 4 coats of clear coat.

You can't powder the plastic though. You'd melt it in the process.

I personally want to have my case chromed btw. 😉

Basically i'm a bit screwed because i have an HQ-08 and the whole front of the case is plastic. The best i can do is colour the side panels and top to match the front piece.

Currently my case is coated in paint removal goop (thanks Renob, after removing the paint i will get the cutting done and then suss out the colour scheme

Renob, if you want to make the entire case black for instance, what is one to do if the front is plastic? If you have a white case and you spray the sides black then what are you to do with the front of the case? You can't leave it white. Any suggestions for giving it the same smooth appearance?

Also, what do you suggest for plastic bezels of drives like cdrw's, dvd's, etc.?

Jagr10 give it a quick sanding with 300grit then prime it around 3to4 light coats with the same primer as the metal be sure when your all done with the prime work to sand with 600 grit then 800 and all your stuff will come out very smooth and as far as the drives I ordered all black drives... I have heard that the front of drives come off easy so when you get them off do the same as abouve

You dont have to strip the case first.

All you have to do is remove evrything that could get damaged like power supply, switches, led's, etc. Get bucket of hot soapy water, wet sand the surface with something like 800 grit or so wet/dry sand paper.
Then use polyurethane paint, automotive type.
Lay on your base coats.
if you want it to come out really nice you should scuff the surface with those green 3m pads between coats...when it drys of course.
When you think you have enough of a base coat, do some more wet sanding and then do your clear coats. You can sand between clear coats if you want an even better shine.
Now after it thoroughly dried...36 hours or so. Mask off your design or air brush your design, let dry, scuff some more and clear it again...you will have a finish that looks like a deep pool that you could dive into.
