I have a Netgear wireless router and have 64bit WEP enabled. I did change the admin password on the router as well. I have been running ZoneAlarm Pro with NAV on my main computer (this would be the one I'd be most concerned with someone hacking) but I have no firewall on my laptop and I'm running Win2k Pro on it.

My main rig is not wireless and I'm running XP Pro SP2. Am I overlooking anything?

Bear in mind that though the same word Security is used to describe Secure Internet Connection and Secure Wireless from a Computer functioning perspective there is No relation between the two.

Wireless Security has Nothing to do with securing the Internet Connection.

Wireless is just a replacement for a Wire and thus can be intercepted by people in the neighborhood attaching them self to your Signal and use your LAN and your LAN's Internet Connection. To avoid Local Tapping there are Wireless Security measures. These measures are unique to the Wireless components, and have to be used even if there is No Internet Connection.

These short pages describe the basic principles of functional Wireless Security.

Link to: WEP, WPA, and the Future (802.11i).

Link to: Network Segregation - Adding security to Wireless Network (or to any peer to peer Network).

Internet Connection Security.

Cable/DSL Router Hardware NAT and Firewall/AntiVirus/AntiSpy applications are the ones that protect the Internet connection from being invaded/infested, and preventing your LAN computers (Wired and Wireless) from transmitting out to the Internet privileged information.

All the computers (as a Network) would have basic Internet protection by using a Cable/DSL Router. In addition, each computer on your Network that has access to the Internet should have its own Internet Connection protection regardless of whether it uses Wire or Wireless.

Link to: Internet infestation -Or, how you are getting Internet "Junk" in and compromise your Computer/Network?

I'll check out some of those links later from home. I know there is a difference between wireless security and internet connection security. Since both go through the same router I'd just like to make sure I am not leaving any doors open that will allow an unscrupulous person to access my data on any of my computers.

I've read some say that WEP isn't enough and can be hacked pretty easily...guess I'll have to do some research tonight when I get home. It's been a while since I've thought about it quite frankly. I'm not really too concerned with any of my neighbors since I live in a detached house and have very few neighbors within range.

Thanks for the links though.

Edit-Looks pretty good so far, my router should protect me from incoming request...just need to get some software loaded to monitor outbound request from all my computers.

Thanks again for the suggestions. :D
