I think a 650 is a fine starter bike, just don't twist the throttle all the way open. And if you start with a reasonable bike, you won't be looking for a new one in six months.

There are some practical things they teach you on the bikes. Even though the bikes are complete crap, riding them in the course still gives you good basic of knowledge about bike handling and how to operate the controls.

You can't learn how to ride a motorcycle from reading a book.
