As much as I'd like to not hassle with the penny, I do have a penny jar that I cash in every year and it does accumulate into real money.

Exactly. You people that don't want pennies, do whatever you want with them, I don't care, just don't try force everyone else to follow your silly lead.

this

If, by "this" you mean "TO HELL WITH THAT" then I'm on board.

When I am King of the Americas, I will crush you with the pennies, nickels and quarters that are being phased out as obsolete. Then your broken body will be fed to the smelter with the useless coins.

My super-tough three story robo-tank-limo will be forged from your blood, and the blood of anyone else who tries to oppose the great rounding. You have been warned!

I put on my robe and wizard hat.

Ooooo! Pics?

fapfapfap...

But I thought BO was for change?

Shoot, BO doesn't think America is ready for the DTV transition, he'd never think we're ready to go without pennies.

Ass nickels?

Not really, that system makes it easier to justify spending change. I hate getting change here in the US as I almost never use it. At least in Europe you can get rid of it pretty easily. The best part being that all the prices you see are exact. For instance grab a sandwich and it says 2 Euro, you don't end up paying 2.04 Euro at the register, but the price on the card. I always hate buying something for 99 cents, and never having that extra penny to pay for the tax :|

I'm pretty sure that's got close to nothing to do with having higher denomination coins.

lulz.. Awesome pun. 😉

LET THE NICKEL AND DIME STAY! Jesus Christ people... We get rid of those when we can't even buy a small tootsie roll for a nickel or dime.

The penny will never be killed until the nickel is changed or dumped. Why? Because the nickel costs 10 cents to make! Without the penny the mint will need to make more nickels and incur even more of a loss.

I say kill both the penny and nickel which are both useless. Make the half-dollar more common as well.

Round everything to the nearest 10 cents. It's totally insane that a 1c coin still exists. They are completely worthless.

though relying on dimes would end up costing the consumer a good bit more per year, iirc. great info in this article.

I want the US monetary system to be like the European one. Coins for anything less than 2 dollars, i.e. 2, 1, 50, 25, 10. Then the usual 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 incrememnts for bills. Get rid of the penny...it's pointless.

what do you do if something costs 25 cents and you pay with three dimes? How do you get your change? I guess that example works with anything that leads to a 5 cent increment, excluding 25 cents.

If we moved to a system that eliminated the small change then the prices would be bumped just a bit to round it out properly. You'd end up paying a few cents more every time which could add up. Of course if those 'extra cents' were put towards a decent project it wouldn't be so bad.

exactly. the retailer would mark up, and all of that adds up each year.

Don't change anything. Face it. None of your lives would feel like they got better at all if they got rid of the penny. It is not worth the head aches.

All of these stupid arguments were made before New Zealand phased out the 1c, 2c and 5c coins. None of them turned out to be true. Getting rid of smaller denominations as your money becomes less valuable makes sense.

...and what exactly would happen that would make my life better if we phased out the penny? Sell me enough reasons that justify all of the head aches involved. Saying that "it just makes sense" is not a strong argument. There has to be a major fiscal advantage to counter all of the problems in order for it to truly make sense. There also needs to be enough of those advantages that goes beyond the point of breaking even with the disadvantages. In other words, even if you can find a counter argument which proves to me that all of the suggested disadvantages are not true then it still isn't worth it because there is no reason to do it "just because". You will need more than that. A lot more.

There's nothing stupid about my arguments.

the only issue with that is you end up carrying around 30 lbs in fing change

Why would you carry 30lbs in change?

Do you currently carry 30 1 dollar bills in your wallet? No, you probably don't.

Change is more convenient. You'd have only a few coins in your pocket, and if you needed a greater amount of money, you'd use bills.

I love the dollar coins right now, but frankly no one uses them, and whats worse, I've yet to find a vending machine that accepts them.

It's not enough that it costs more than a penny to mint a penny? I mean, we're clearly going to have to do this in the future, and the "headaches" will be the same. We've phased out our lowest denomination coin in the past too, and the sky didn't fall.
