I miss when the biggest thing Americans had to worry about was the president lying about getting a blowjob.

Say wha? I've seen figures stating that upwards of half of Americans have seen a mental health professional of some sort, for some reason. And we all hear the figures about how many people are on anti-depressants or some other kind of drug.

Is mental illness still a taboo topic in your world?

How is your treatment going? Do they still have you on those anti-psychotic drugs?

Sick of all the crazy people in this world now. It's no wonder there hasn't been any cure for cancer..scientists probably can't be bothered to cure this world the way it is now.

I'm with you, Mayne; I didn't take History either.

There's just too fucking much money in cancer research/treatment for a "cure" to ever be found...or released.

Crazy has nothing to do with it.

:D +1

Now tune into the season's biggest surprise reality hit and go way back to a simpler time with Piltdown Mayne. In this week's episode, Piltdown Mayne shivers while reflecting that fire really wasn't all that complicated.

It's 24-hour news and the internet. Now you hear about all the stuff that stayed as local news (if that) before.
I hear that saying a lot, except here is my problem, I went to inner city schools and never feared for my life once, never heard of anyone getting killed, same went for friends at other schools. Since 2009 the Douglas County school tip line has prevent 6 major crimes and just arrested 2 more girls plotting murder 3 weeks ago.

Douglas county is the richest school district in the state, it's all white well to do kids.. what is their problem? why are they so mad? They are not the only school district here in Colorado with that problem (Arapahoe and Columbine might ring a bell)

Yeah, crime and violence has always been around, but no one will convince me that crime in schools has been the way it is now and I went to school when crack was the BIG thing.

So, the 1800s were better? What about living in Africa, Brazil, or Afghanistan?

We live in awesome times. The one reason why I stopped watching the news is because it would encourage me to think negatively. I don't know if you watch the news. Get away from it. Old people love to talk like the world is coming to an end. Then they tell me that they watch the news.

Oh I wasn't saying there aren't variations, some times are of course worse than others to some degree. It's the 'oh it's worse now than ever' view that I was addressing.

No, as it turns out they mixed up my prescription with the guy standing in line behind me. All I was supposed to be taking was for the gonorrhea I got from your disease-ridden wife.

this whole gratification world is freaking me out.

I'm pretty sure the forms of gratification people sought ought in the past would freak you out more. How would you like to be a gladiator?

I want to go back before I read this thread. :colbert:

aka, it's mostly just in your head. Every time and Age has had its' shit to deal with. Shit increase and shit decreases. The type of shit occurring is in a constant ebb and flow as well as its' severity. Despite our myriad problems, we are living in one of the best Ages in all history. If you want to long for shittier times, go ahead, but don't expect me to join you.

As a scientist in basic research, please stop repeating this. It is utter nonsense with no grounding in reality. Cancer is not a simple disease with easy solutions.

And most scientists are not getting rich doing research. Take a look at what postdocs (people with PhDs) and graduate students generally make. They're the backbone of basic research in this country and they make shit.

And then on the economics side, why would anyone not want to invent a cure? They'd be fucking rich and put their competitors out of business. No one is going to buy a treatment when they can get the cure.

Do you work in the field?

If you did, you'd know there is still plenty of stigma to go around.
