What's yer point? Is M$ going to raid my apartment and delete it off my HD? It happens, thats just the way it is. The price of OSes are superficially high b/c they know the tech savvy will find alternative means of obtaining it, it is after all only software. Its the businesses and other "legitimate" users who go out and spend money paying retail price.

I got up bright and early and got my Geforce3 Ti 200 at Best Buy on Thursday morning just a few minutes after 6am (and in some stores from what I hear, as there were over 100 people in front of me in line, I would have gone away empty-handed).
In some instances, it's up to 40% faster than my Geforce2 Pro 64MB was, though what I really bought it for was new features and visual quality. I've never seen 3DMark 2001 all the way through until now, which was interesting, but I really wanted stuff like environment bump mapping, and such. I bought Return to Castle Wolfenstein at the same time, and am hooked. Even with all the graphics features turned on, Single Player mode is very fluid at 1024x768 on my Samsung 19" monitor (by the way, I agree on the Samsung monitors, you can't go wrong with them for features/price).

I have a faster CPU than you, an Athlon XP 1600+, but I'd say with a P3-850 it still should make a noticeable difference over a Voodoo3 and it adds 32 bit color support in games, which is now a HUGE plus. Hope you managed to get one for your son, I'm sure he'd enjoy it.

Actually, the words are "Corresponding HARDWARE". Most places will sell an OEM copy with a Microsoft Mouse or something similar, which makes the sale legal.

Personally, along with my job comes a membership to the MSDN, so I can use XP at home for work purposes. Unfortunately, every time I try to install it, on the first boot it hangs at "Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration..." It doesn't really hang that is, I can Ctrl-Alt-Del, but it just sits there and does nothing. I have top of the line hardware, so I don't know what the problem is.

Who is to say the words? OEM software should never be distributed without a corresponding PC. a quote from Microsoft site.

My point is, if you can't afford it, you have no right to use it. It doesn't matter if it is over priced. Who said you had to upgrade to Windows XP? You're under no obligation to uprade it. You can by paying the full price. If you had your own band and was just starting to sell your own CD's, how would you like it if one of the buyer copied it all off and distrubuted on Morpheus? Like it or not, Intellectual Property is treated just like physical property. Do you go around stealing cars just because you want the car and can't afford it?

MS will more than likely not raid your house, but there's a good chance they'll take a legal action against the seller and drop them off from Microsoft certified shop list.


If I find out down the road that a software I've purchased from them was illegal, I'd expect a FULL refund. Its happened to me before. It was an OEM version of Nero that only works with certain brand of hardware. I tried to return it after I opened it, because software was only meant to work with Lite-On and didn't work with mine(I didn't know about this when I bought it). They refuse to give me my money back because its been opened, they obviously didn't give a crap about their customer, because it was their mistake for selling an OEM software under the pretense of full version. Oh well I had my money back instantly when I explained them they're legally not allowed to sell OEM software as retail, I have a proof of purchase and I was taking their ass to court.

I didn't realize I was dealing with Bill Gates Jr. over here. They could really use your legal expertise in their current anti-trust dealings. I'm not gonna keep replying to this as it has gone way OT.

I can afford to pay the money to upgrade my OS every few years, but considering M$ has a monopoly on the OS market and the fact I am *forced* to upgrade every few years (either to maintain hardware functionality or software compatibility), I just don't feel the need to keep putting money in M$ pocket just to keep my friggin computer working. Instead, I'd rather spend my money in other ways. I guess I'm just an unethical prick heheh, but paying full retail for an OS is for suckers.

Everything is running very nicely here! My first Nvidia experience has been totally positive!
Can't thank everyone enough for the "push"....

The step-up from the Voodoo 3 (in combination with the new monitor) is pretty dazzling. My boy is loving every minute of it....he spent *hours* playing FIFA 2001 last night. This is the game that challenges him the most so I was really happy to see him try to push it. No one here plays FPS games , but we may just have to load the Serious Sam demo (after the kids are asleep ) just to check it out!

Oh, and Chiz, I was very curious about PoR (I still remember the gold box verion quite well), but the initial bug reports made me hang back....of course now it will look best on my son's machine (grrrrr). And the whole family is waiting to check out Neverwinter Nights. The buzz is good so far.

Boy LoneWolf, nice to know someone else was successful....I didn't realize how lucky I was until I checked out the grumpy threads about all the folks who weren't able to snare one. All those guys who bought ahead and then PM'd made me feel like a bit of a dolt .

The most fun is going to computer shows with the family.....the vendors will try the hard sell on my husband and he just shrugs and points at me! I'm trying to get my daughter interested but it's a bit uphill.

AT is a great place to hang out! The things I've learned and the deals I've snagged have really deepened my enjoyment of all things computer-oriented!
