I was allergic to about everything when I was a kid. Dogs, cats, most anything green, along with ragweed, and the other stuff that comes out in warmer weather. I was sick a lot, from the allergies, and not sleeping, as it's hard to go to school when you want to be in bed all the time because you sleep better in the daytime than at night. One positive thing, I couldn't cut the grass, even if I wanted to, the chopped up particles from it caused me major problems.

When I was about 15, I had taken allergy shots for almost 10 years, and wasn't allergic to dogs at all anymore and cats really didn't bother me either, the green stuff wasn't a big deal, unless I was around xmas trees, they killed me! I decided to quit the shots, against the doctor's advice. He warned me that I would be back "before too long", and be getting back on the shots.

He was wrong, for 25+ years, I had no problems except around fresh cut grass, and xmas trees, no big deal. Then, when I was 42, I was outside in a rural area, and my nose started itching, and running and my eyes were driving me nuts. It was worse than ever. Claritin was on RX back then, and expensive too, but it worked ok, and since then, the allergies have toned down and aren't so bad anymore, but I breathe better on the Claritin. It's really cheap at Sam's Club..

I don't know but when I was a kid, I suffered from Asthma attacks triggered by allergies - and I grew out of them and haven't had an attack in 6+ years. Hell, I don't even have a reaction to those allergies anymore.

Also, does Hawaii have a wet and Dry season? Your allergies could be triggered by a certain plant that only pollenates once a year....

I used to be lactose intolerant when young... I remember thinking, "why does my stomach sting and hurt everytime I drink milk?"

Now it's perfectly gone... Our body is messed up.

[edit]
I'm not in Hawaii, I'm in New England. :) (read again)

Hey, maybe you still have that dairy/ milk allergy, but it's sort of expressing itself differently. For example, dairy products might snesitize your immune system a bit, leading to you over-reacting to other allergens.

I'm allergic to the preservatives they put in most eye drops. I have to use the single-serving drops. Does nothing for the redness, tho. :(

Go see a doc, or better yet, an allergist.
Get an Rx for Astelin nasal spray, it's been a miracle drug AFAIK. Works when Claritin, Allegra, etc have been ineffective.

Allergies are a manifestation of one's weakness, propogating from the genetic level. It's our right--indeed our duty--to wipe you from the planet, so that we can cut this weak strain out.

yeap
OTC stuff is ok (at the very least get Claritn-D not jsut Claritin)
Regardless, go see an allergist, run through the PIA tests and get some real meds. I normally have to take pills, drops and nasal spray for mine, but this year Ive been ok with just OTC Claritin.

I didn't have allergies until my Senior year in HS, 13yrs later Im still suffering like a mofo.

I agree with going to go see the doctor.

I vividly remember the first time I suddenly had seasonal allergies as described by the OP. I remember wanting to scratch my eyes out and feeling sort of relief and pain at the same time when I scratched...

I guess I kind of grew out of them over the years because I don't get nearly as bad allergies any more. I remember the doctor prescribed some drops to put in my eyes to relieve the itch when it got bad... it was a greyish liquid and it worked like a charm. Instant itch/pain/misery relief until the next time. I guess it was anti-histamine?

Go to your GP, get a RAST or ST, let them know that antihistamines aren't working for you (they'll put you on Intranasal cromolyns, antileukotrine/antihistamine combo, or corticosteroids), then see an allergist if things don't improve. IF the allergist can't help you, see an ENT for further treatment options.

To answer your first question, allergic rhinitis is a defense mechanism to prevent irritants from entering your lungs. You must become sensitized to the irritants before AR appears. This usually happens in late childhood, but can happen to adults when they move to a new place that has irritants they haven't been exposed to before.
