I want to drive on the Autobahn

Ok, so I have this vacation idea itching me to pull the trigger. I am thinking sometime this Spring/Summer/Fall I want to go on a road trip through Germany (and maybe Switz). For some reason I have driving on the autobahn in a german sedan up on a pedestal.

I was in Europe for a month a few years ago and spent most of the time in Italy, Switz, and Germany. Loved every bit of it, but I traveled by train everywhere with the rail pass. This autobahn trip won't be my first trip, nor my last, to Europe. No need to blow a vessel that I might miss the "best" part of Germany by wasting my time on the autobahn.

Has anyone driven on the autobahn? Where is the best place to spend a 2-4 day road trip in Germany? Any good tips on renting a car in Germany?

EDIT: Obviously the vacation would be spending time in cities throughout Germany while driving on the autobahn to get to them. Im not just going to drive on the autobahn for 8 hours straight for a few days.

It's pretty much just a highway. I didn't drive on it personally, but was a passenger on it many times, and once stuck in a traffic jam on it without moving for a few hours.

I've driven on it, unless you're on an unrestricted section then it's not terribly exciting. When it is you'd better be prepared to haul ass and then get out of the way for the faster car behind you!

I rented a car through Europcar, worked out great for me!

The autobahn is glorified here and yes you'll see lambos going fast, but it's not all that much different than the autostrada in Italy.

Seeing the way most Americans drive over here, slow as hell in the fast lane, we shouldn't let them drive at all on the Autobahn unless they get a German License.

I would love to drive on "the autobahn" just to say I did it. America has its autobahns as well if youre willing to break the law. Back in 2007, I was driving my Mercedes C230 playing tag with a BMW 325 drivin by two women and a brand new slate grey Porsche 911 Turbo. Of course the Porsche could waste us at will and it was fun watching him do so on I20 in east Texas on a Thursday afternoon headed to Lousiana averaging between 100 and 135 MPH for about 50 miles. The roar of those turbos was very sweet indeed.

When I got my BMW, I should have done a European delivery. It's cheaper and you get to drive your car on the autobahn.

Oh well, next time.

I think that is my problem. I don't care about seeing lambos or any of that. I live in San Diego, cars I can never afford I see on a daily basis.

You could rent a car and do the 'Ring. Might be more of the experience you're looking for.

qft.

Esplain a me por favor

The Nurburgring.
It's basically the place to test cars. If you really want to cut loose in your auto. I would imagine it would beat the pants off of just getting to go 100mph+ in a straight line.

Nürburgring, 13 miles of the best track on the face of the earth. The mecca of everything auto.

Damn, well, at least I spelled it more correctly! Take that arrfep!

Ah, that is interesting. To make an odd point on this vacation idea, it really doesn't have to do with speed. My want to go 120mph + is very weak if in existance at all.

Most parts of the German Autobahn have speed limits now, but I can still recommand a drive in Europe. The Schengen deal means that you can zip straight across the borders in most countries, so you do not have to limit yourself to Germany.

A few Suggestions:

Southern Germany is very nice in the summer.
Berlin - cool city and very significant historically.
The Alps are beautiful in the summer. Saltzburg, for instance, is nice.
South of the Alps, Slovenia is worth a visit. An entire country which looks like something straight out of a jigsaw puzzle.
Bruxelles - the "capital" of EU.
Northern France and Paris.

Or you could head north:
Denmark - picturesque rolling hills, and the cities have old and interesting architecture.
Sweden - the landscape quickly gets rough and beautiful. and the weather often is surprisingly good in the summer.

Even further North:
Norway - the coast is amazing. Slartibartfast's award was well-deserved.

A word of caution though: Avoid the congested part of the German Autobahn when it is most crowded. The queues go on for many kilometres.

Yeah, you can really put the pedal down on the autobahn.

Mind you, that was on a weekend, in the summer, on the A8...

Got to open it up at night though. 😉
