Better zoom, IS, and I think more options. I haven't played around with the new A series though.

(Major downside would be the size of it)

EDIT: I ended up getting an SD700IS earlier in the summer. It was as low as $305 a couple days ago. Good prices on the S3 lately as well as has been mentioned.

I was going to suggest that myself! I almost got the SD700IS, although pricey. Might also look into the A710IS that was just released.

EDIT: The A630/A640/A710 will not be released until 10/15 (according to Amazon)

Just noticed your $500 price range. With that you could get a Nikon D50 dSLR kit if you really wanted to get into it.
 
again, if you're doing scenery you should pick up something with at least a 28mm wide angle. most compact cameras start at 35mm or 38mm wide angle, which isn't all that wide at all. look at the difference.

The A710IS has a wide-angle converter lense that I can get. It's definitely an option.

I was looking to get a new camera and had decided on getting the Panasonic FZ7 before I realized I didn't really need one and am saving my money for a Wii and christmas gifts.

The S3IS was just unconfortable and too heavy for me. The zoom on the FZ7 was also better even though they were both 12x.

I'm seriously considering the Canon S3 for $349.95 from B&H Photo. I've seen it for less at other places but I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable buying from them.
 
I really like the Canon SD models. The main reason being is that besides taking good pictures, they fit easily in your pocket. If your camera is really easy to take with you then you will find yourself taking it with you more often and you will take more pics.
 
An update to my search...

I've narrowed down my search to either the A710IS, A640, or the S3 IS. From what I've read, the S3 IS uses the last generation image sensor while the A's use the newest (just released). The A's are smaller (physically) than the S3. The S3 has a better lense than the A's.

Hmmm.... Time to ponder some more 🙂

You should be able to find a good deal on a Canon S2 IS. I upgraded from a Powershot A25 to the S2 IS.

Personally I've always found the A-series to be too much of a compromise, too big to fit in your pocket but not a huge quality difference compared to the S/SD series to warrant an extra bag (I used to make my gf carry it in her purse, then found out that my DSLR would fit in her purse🙂)

I have a Casio Z850. I LOVE IT. It has one hell of a fast shutter speed so I can take any shot at will, regardless if i'm moving or not. It has a 8 meg cache so you can take 3 to 4 pics (depending on quality settings) all within 1 second.

It's the best P&S camera i've ever owned (like it better than the canon). It's macro shot ability is just awesome (but you have to use manual mode, not the standard "macro mode" they have).

The thing has soo many options, and after the latest firmware, the video is crazy awesome.

I have big short fat fingers so the small cameras are hard for me to operate.
 
I've decided on the A710 IS. Now I just have to wait for Christmas to come around and for someone to give it to me! Anyone? Anyone?
