San Jose, Ca. here... a townhome, A TOWNHOME, across the street just went for a little over 615k... 3 bedroom, around 1200 square feet.


 
just get a huge loan that you can't afford like the recent trend seems to be. Make your monthly payment each month which only covers the interest and then four years from now go into some tough times lose the house declare bankruptcy and start living off the government. This seems to be a pretty popular cycle for people in so cal.
 
Move to southern Indiana. In December I bought a 3BR, 2 Bath, 2 car garage, 1350 sq. ft., built in 2001, all brick, with deck and yardbarn for $118k.

And the BIG plus is that the company I work for nicely competes against similar industries in salary that might be located in higher cost areas... thus I make out quite nicely.
 
Northern IN is cheap too, but I'm was working my way outta the state until I got married to someone who didn't want to leave due to family being in the area. The low cost is nice tho!

I also married someone who didn't want to move any farther from her family. Its we've been married 5 years, and dated 3 years before that - my wife has finally agreed that for us to afford a family, we need to move. And she's to a point where she isn't attached to her family anymore so she's now excited about moving.

Plus, commute time is usually shorter... and people are nicer... and the air and water is cleaner...

Do what I did, and what many do: move. I know quite a few people that sold what they had in the SF area and moved to the SE (I'm in Atlanta) and got a lot more home for the spending dollar.

I have a home in Tulsa, OK and a condo in downtown Atlanta, and in my view Atlanta is just as expensive as any other area in the US. You can get a reasonable home in a suburb of Atlanta if you want a 1+ hour commute, but even tiny bungalows in the midtown and surrounding areas are $500k+... easy.

Atlanta is a great city though.
 
Sure, Buckhead lofts are running $500K, but the folks I know got from $750K to over a million for their SF lofts.

One of my neighbors works for a manjor chemical company and working in the SF area, but lives in Atlanta. He said my little $250K home was going for a easy million, and his ranch that he paid $217K goes for about three-quarters of a million. WOW! Of course, I am thinking of extremes, and healthy portions of California are like NYC, Boston, DC, etc. in terms of property prices and general cost of living.
