How about openTTD? It's free, and if you are really into building things, you can actually model your own buildings and vehicles and trains using 3D modeling software and render them and put them into the game and contribute to the 32-bit graphic project.

Have you tried X3 Terran Conflict or anything else in the X series of games?
Building factory complexes can be challenging... But the game is MUCH MUCH more than a building game ...

OpenTTD is awesome, I remember getting Transport Tycoon MANY years ago and being hooked on it, and then getting TTD when it was released. Played around quite a bit with mods and eventually OpenTTD came about. It's a bit slow to get started in the game, but it's really really awesome.

If you can't get alpha centauri to work, easiest way I know of is to set up a win98 Virtual machine and just run it in there :)

I picked up Tropico 3 a while ago during a steam sale. Always fancied the idea of becoming a dictator of my own island. Just started playing it recently and it's lots of fun. A great twist on the Sim City style games.

Ya I played that for a while, really enjoyed it. Once you really learn how to build though, building the same pattern of buildings, or in the same order, really works for every scenario, so it kinda gets boring after a while.

The expansion also pissed me off a lot. Constant earthquakes and hurricanes destroying half my buildings makes the game no fun.

EVE Online, unless CCP is actually going through with screwing the pooch and jumping the shark with the NeX store Aurum thing.

Here's a game for you - an MMO largely about crafting (no combat):

A tale in the desert. It's amazing for building things.
