buy a BASIC Stamp processor, and some electronics for it, and you can build an autonomous robot.

And name it TOBOR the Magnificent!

sygyzy, what are you building?

Mike,

I am building a MINT based amp. It is based on the META42 design. I am going to put it in an Altoids can.

The MINT or META42 are rather easy projects and it takes maybe 2-3 hours max to finish the electronics portion. Try making the Gilmore Dynamic Class A amp or something else that's cool. There are tons of projects in the headwize library.

TESLA COIL!!!

Actually, you can build them in HS, but its more fun when you really know whats going on.

MIKE

Google it.

Its pretty easy, some buddies and I did it last year.

Transformer can be tough to get, but one of my friends had just got one off eBay, so we got around that.

Headphone amp is one of the more useful small projects you could do. Or you could get a lego mindstorms set and hack it and build a cheap robot.

I also suggest building a good amp, whether it's tube of SS, it's up to you. Afterward, post pics, and if you do well, I'll pay you to build me 2 tube monoblocks. :D

Just get a kit from Bottlehead and build them yourself! :)

I did have a lot of fun with a 12,000 volt transformer and various other things:

apply one lead to the bottom of a lightbulb, then the other to a metal ring that slips down around the lightbulb with about an inch of clearance all the way around --- fire it up and watch a REALLY COOL light show! careful though if its closer in one area than another it will burn a pinhole in the lightbulb and create an AWESOME arc lamp as a little oxygen gets into the bulb and it burns. Hey and when it is all over just plug the bulb back into a socket and it will work! although for only a minute or so if you have a pinhole in it (smoking all the way I might add...)

I also built silly things like a jacob's ladder...

A transformer? You mean, two coils with specifications given by a single set of equations? You could build that in like, 15 minutes.

Putting various things in a microwave oven is always interesting.

Here we see a vacuum fluorescent display from a VCR meeting its demise.

Be careful of certain things, the fumes emitted can be quite bad for your health. If you perform such procedures with any given frequency, a dedicated cavity along with an appropriate fume hood is absolutely required.

Happy muwaving!

Cheers!

Radios are still pretty tricky to make from pure components. At least, ones that get good reception.

Thanks for all the quick replys guys! The amplifier idea is EXACTLY the type of thing I was looking for. Something I can make, and that has a purpose! I already ordered all the parts I need for it! :) I can't wait.

Anything else that anyone can think of?

They are headphone amplifiers. They amplify the signal so you can listen to headphones louder.
