You can get a free account at 30mb.com. 30 megabytes for space, unlimted traffic. You can get a domain at godaddy and point there. 30mb.com does not have sql support, but does support PHP. You can start a small simple forum using a flat file system there and see if this is your cup of tea, then move on to bigger/better things. . .

No since those are two different domains.

You would need to register two domains.

Here's the "catch":
1) I pay $5/mo for the web hosting account which is fine with me.
2) There are no ads, no banners, no spam, no nothing. What you get is 100% free web hosting (already have 8 AT'ers signed up and using it for email, pichosting, forums, postnuke, etc.)
3) I'm not sure how long this will last for. Could be 3 months, 6 months or 5 years.

It's a good way to "get your feet wet" with some experience in being a "web master". After you get the hang of it, you can change to a paid web host which offers more.

If you register a domain today, your web site will be online and ready for the world to see by tomorrow morning.

RossMAN has the best deal to get your feet wet. @ 50/500, you can test the boundaries of your website and upgrade from there. He's not a business looking into getting you into a contract and charging you for breaking it.

RossMAN is kind enough to host one of my sites. It's free and i want to use the domain to manage emails and teach my parents how to use it through an email client. Something i can control and teach that i wouldn't be able to do with free emails, yahoo/hotmail.
Basically, i paid 8.88 for my dns and that's email for a year. well worth it.

on the other hand, my main website is hosted by devioustrap and i control everything from my own blog, subdomains, and forums for my other friends.

If your epiphany is correct, you need to make strives towards that. Take what's free and move from there.

how come web hosting company no longer offer ssh/telnet/shell access? when i searched for a web host 2 years ago, all of the companies i researched offered ssh. now, no one is offering the service.

why the change?

You can do all of that via a file manager. All of the hosts I have used had a basic one so I install a program called fileman. It is pretty easy to install and you can run certain commands that enable you to install just about anything on your site.

There are some hosts that allow jailcell ssh access. One the comes to mind is bluewho.

You can do all of that via a file manager. All of the hosts I have used had a basic one so I install a program called fileman. It is pretty easy to install and you can run certain commands that enable you to install just about anything on your site.

orion7144 is correct. If your web host uses cPanel control panel (the most popular) it offers File Manager which is already installed it's like a web based FTP client which allows you to edit documents on the fly (including your .htaccess) So it's quick and easy.

Some web hosts do offer SSH but usually you'll need to provide justification.
