Ok let me rephrase that. Are you sure this is a wise purchase? It doesn't seem like it too me but hey its your money so spend it how you see fit.
If he likes it there is nothing wrong with that. Assuming he's not a watch collector. But even if you were a watch collector it doesn't hurt to have at least one quartz watch. I prefer automatics though.

The very rich spend hundreds of thousands of dollars every year on watches, on average.

It's obscene.

I been thinking about one of these also. Love the wood and metal look. Not sure which i like the best though.

Your style sounds like the polar opposite of mine, which is fine but all black sounds boring to me. I also haven't found a leather band I really like the look of either.

Black watches aren't very durable either unless they're plastic. It is pretty easy to scratch those finishes and they just look like shit once they get a few scratches. Then again, wood is probably the least durable material to make watches out of.

Nope, probably not the smartest purchase... but some times you need to reward yourself with something nice when you can afford it. $260 is much easier to swallow than the $350 it originally costs. I'm not making the usual baller AT money, but it's really a little over a day's worth of work for me in reality.

Once the fiance said it would look nice for the wedding, I considered it worth it.

Congrats on your purchase. Jewelry is never justifiable from a function standpoint...only on an emotional level. If you are going to enjoy it and you have the money...just do it.

Given the price I'd imagine it is a quartz watch.

If you think $5k is a lot to spend on a watch you should hang out on the Rolex forums. You can barely get into a SS Rolex for $5k and the gold models go for $20-30k or more. We won't even get into the Pateks or AP watches. :D

Personally I prefer Sinn, Damasko, D. Dornbluth & Sohne, Glashutte original and A.Lange & Sohne.

Oh and also Grand Seiko. ;)

Never owned any kind of jewelry so not a big aesthetic watch fan. Use a Timex $35 Expedition. But the wood watches are definitely cool looking.

Yolo m8. Seen this 70 year old guy sell an old ass rolex for 25k after having appraised.

Could be a good buy in the long run.

I do not like wood watches at all but those are better than most, although still kind of fugly. Not a big fan of most leather straps either except for the one on my Movado 800 series. The band is really cool with the circular divets and the white stitching, and the clasping system is dead sexy also, but it tears the band up after some time, so functionally it's meh. My favorite watches have silver metal bands or black rubber ones - my favorite two seikos, Citizen diver and Tissot watch are all silver metal or black rubber - besides the leather Movado 800. This is the Movado:

When I made E-5 my mom sent me a nice little Fossil.

I never wear it. But it looks nice in my jewelry drawer.

Never wasted money on a watch. I have a phone that's always on me that tells perfect time in multiple time zones, who needs a watch?
I had a few timex ironman watches I loved that the battery died and a metal watch someone took off my wrist in a crowd once. That was my last watch.
My only qualification would be that it has to be able to be submerged in liquid. Not a dive watch necessarily.
My grandfather had a beautiful Tag Huerer (spelling don't care) dive watch where the bezel numbers glowed in the dark and had a navigation ring for night dives. But he was a great diver and used in the Red Sea and all over the world.
I have a lot of arm hair so the watches with the links of chain always pull the hair out, I could never wear one like this.

I want it solely for it's looks. I've always liked the mix of metal and wood, and this hits the perfect balance for me. But that's really all it's got going for it... For $350 I could get a decent Eco drive or something similar. Is there anything else out there that has a similar look that I can't find? Every time I look for wood watches they're almost completely wood, which isn't what I want. The mix of metal and wood is key and I can't find it anywhere else.

I've never worn a watch in my life, but this I probably would.

He paid less than $300 for a watch. Good grief.
Yes I realize that but per the OP he has other things that this money might be better spent on. $300 could pay for the flowers at his wedding, I own a garden center and $300 would go a long way in landscaping his home, he also wants to install a fence on his property. $300 could pay for the posts and concrete.
He also mentions he works at a steel mill so this purchase would get limited use. It doesn't matter anyway though. His wife gave him the go ahead so he is now the proud owner of a watch.

I haven't worn a watch in about 10 years. Even then it was a $5 watch I used to time myself running with. Only wore it while I ran. I hate all jewelry. Just feels awkward.

C'mon guys he's baiting you. Don't fall for. We all know real men wear watches on our wrist and have the latest Apple or Samsung phone in our pockets. It's the only way to be 100% sure what time it is. Plus it just looks cool. You have a phone AND a watch. That's pretty cool.
