I want this guys expiring domain name, should i email him??

Here's my dilemma....

This dude has the domain name i want with no website on it, there hasnt been one on it for about a year. It expires March 2nd of this year and I was wondering if i should email him and ask if hes going to keep it? Or just suck it up and hope he does.. My problem is that If he's going to keep it, id rather just register another name now for my computer company. My domain expires Feb 1st, so i'll be websiteless for about a month.

What should i do? I have a gut feeling if i email him he will try to get some money outta me...

um.. fork over the 19 bucks or whatever needed for yer site to be registered for another year.. send and email to the guy asking if hes using it or not.. no big deal cuz you already have a site, but would sorta like his domain better... tell him you'll pay a tiny bit for it if he asks... nothin big tho

I would wait and and see if he renews it or not. If he knows that your interested he may play hard to get.

No it's not. You can transfer your domain to a new registrar of your choice.

I suggest that you do so. There are registrars that sell domains for less than $10 a year.

Thats what im worried about... Damnit, i would hate to loose my website for a month, but for $35, Im sure i could scrap somethin up somehow.. I guess

i would actually e-mail him. but give him the impression that u could care less if he gives it up, but would just like to know so that u don't have to waste your time. basically ask him if he's planning on renewing his domain name because u are interested in it. but if he is going to, that u will register a different name.

Depending on how big your site will be, you could try telling him you're starting on a site to debut in April and you're looking into some domain names now, and would like to know if he'll be renewing it. This way, you don't come off desparate or in need of it.

I transferred my domain from one registrar to another about a year ago.

It's a pretty seamless procedure.

It is idiotic to stay with an overpriced registrar when there are so many other competitive ones around.

When did the prices drop like this?? When i got my first domain it was $70 for the first 2 years up front, then $35 a year after

Also, there is the possibility that the guy will forget to renew his registration and let the domain lapse.

If you email him and remind him, you will effectively be preventing that possibility.

I would wait it out. Even by showing minute interest you could make the bells in his head go off and he being greedy as is the human condition would then almost certainly renew.

On the other hand you might in the worst case loose both your current name and the potential one. I would just fork over and keep the current one and hope to get the other one as well. I know times are tough but what is $10.00 especially if you have a half-decent business...
