at work, everyone accesses their own mp3 collections without sharing and i'm getting jealous as i have nothing to listen to :p

i'm trying to get a remote way of accessing my mp3 data so i can stream it from home to any audio program. i want to choose the songs i would like to play so i don't just want streaming media.

i know i could access my 22gb of songs by just executing it like so: \\the.ip.address.here\whatever in winamp... i'm not sure if it works in itunes but i'd imagine it does.

however, those ports (135, 445, i don't even know) are blocked by my firewall, and i'd prefer to keep it that way. i would like to use a program that would give me customizable options, including letting me know what port this will be going outbound on so i can release it on my router/firewall. the remote control is something i must have (the port issue is secondary and not absolutely necessary)

i don't know what program does this, but someone -- please enlighten me :)

ok you could run a vnc server, but since you're using winamp check out this plugin. Cygnus is a remote control plugin. basically use this with shoutcast. so you can choose what playlist you want to play then shoutcast will start streaming it. the only thing is, this only works with .m3u files. so you'll have to add the songs you want to play in a .m3u file. this will pick up all the songs in that file. you can hit hit next and back to flip through songs. as you can tell this is more aimed at albums than a million mp3s in one folder. i find it works for me.

otherwise, i don't quite understand your question.

if you hosted your mp3s on a server, wouldn't winamp just play them through port 80?

well, that's another problem. my ISP blocks port 80. so i'd have to specify the port somehow...

basically, my question is that i want an easy remote control mp3 playing program. i just want remote access to my entire playlist from my work location.

most of the time you can specify the port you want to use for the application. you can do this with shoutcast and with like apache.

but from your request, check this thread. it sounds like what you want i think.

I have a linux box that streams my mp3's for me. I use icecast2 as the streaming server, and darkice to create the stream. It uses ogg not mp3, and is completely customizable. I use xmms to play the mp3's. Darkice pulls the audio from the soundcard encodes it into ogg then sends it to icecast2 to stream it.

I currently use vnc to control the mp3s as i haven't had time to setup some web interfaces for xmms. There are lots of them out there, and will be moving to them shortly.

Orb or SlimServer like were mentioned earlier in this thread. I use SlimServer. It's got a web interface that you can choose the next song, etc. Not saying it's better than the other solutions but I've got it up and running so i haven't really looked at Orb. Works like a charm.

thanks for the help, guys.

i'm thinking that mp3mystic is a good way to go, but mcrusty, i might haggle you to help me with setting up some streaming media through my linux box ;) my mp3 collection is on a windows machine, but i can easily mount the mp3 directory through samba. the options are endless, i guess. there are a ton of php scripts that allow one to do this (like here)

i'm still undecided on the ideal player to use, but i guess i'll look around and experiment. i definitely have more ideas to work with now, so thanks :)

I used the http://www.orb.com suggestion and it works great. You can host both your audio AND video via the client! The video kinda sucks...but the audio is flawless...overall id say A+...plus...its free!
