I want a web browser that...

... caches pages to the hard drive.

I want it to allow me to tell it how often I want it to check for changes... meaning, I want the anandtech home page to always be displayed from the cache on my hard drive unless it's been a certain period of time since I last visited it, or unless I hit refresh.

I want it to update when I visit the page if the version in the cache is at least an hour old. (Not update the pages automatically if I haven't visited them)

I want to be able to tell it what time period to use for each individual web page... from 1 minute up to 24 hours in reasonable incriments, like... 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours.

I want tabbed browsing, and I want to be able to switch between tabs by deactivating Num Lock, and pressing the number keys to switch between the first 10 tabs.

I want a pop-up blocker, and a notice in a toolbar/taskbar when a pop-up has been blocked.

I want auto-complete for forms and addresses.

I want the browser to open and close fast.

I want the cache size to be adjustable, and I want it to put it anywhere I want it, and I want to be able to clear EVERYTHING, including cookies and auto-complete info with a single click of a button, and/or individual buttons for each category (cache, cookies, auto-complete).

I want to be able to right click a page and "send to..." and I want my e-mail address book from Outlook (& Express), my buddy lists from all the major Instant Messaging programs in the send to menu. The ones to e-mail addresses would e-mail them the link to the page, with the title of the page, as well as the URL in case their e-mail client doesn't allow html. The ones to Instant Messaging handles would be sent just like an instant message, with a link with the title, and the URL. The browser would tell me if that person is not online, and if they are, it would open the message window, insert the stuff, and send the message. And if the message window wasn't already open, it would then close the window.

I want this browswer installed in a single folder of my choice (similar to Firebird), and not tangled up in the Windows folder with 13 registry entries.

I command someone to create a browser that does all of this for me 😀

*EDIT* This is an opportunity for you all to post anything you want added to a web browser 🙂

I also want the web browser to be smart when caching and refreshing... it should ONLY download the things that have changed... in other words, pictures/graphics that appear on web pages and never change should never be downloaded twice unless you clear the cache... or right click the refresh button (a left click of the refresh button would not make it download files that have not changed).

Demon-Xanth and I want a webbrower that won't let a webpage f' up my entire computer. 😀

Neither of them cache pages like I want them to (wait, does Opera? I'm sure Firebird doesn't). Or have the "sent to" menu when right clicking.

BTW... this is an opportunity for all of you to post what you want from a web browser.

I want a webbrower that won't let a webpage f' up my entire computer. (note: who at MS thought that it'd be a good idea to let webpages load stuff that can write to the registry?)

Suppose you have a hunders webpages in your cache and you tell the browser to update them every hour or so.... do you know how much traffic that would result in on your connection... now suppose you have a thousand pages in your cashe... ouch
Now opera lets you refresh a tabbed page according to the schedule you want.... useful for ebay... 😉

No, I don't want it to update every hour, I want it to update when I visit the page if the version in the cache is at least an hour old. I'll change the origional post to be more clear.

Could be done in a Moz / FB extension, but is so esoteric I doubt anyone would write it.

I want tabbed browsing, and I want to be able to switch between tabs by deactivating Num Lock, and pressing the number keys to switch between the first 10 tabs.
Now that's not a bad idea. Go here, create an account, and file a bug requesting that. Set the component to one of the tab-related things, and set severity to "enhancement".

I want a pop-up blocker, and a notice in a toolbar/taskbar when a pop-up has been blocked.
Moz & FB do that.

I want auto-complete for forms and addresses.

Moz does that with quicklaunch. FB doesn't. IE does.

I want the cache size to be adjustable, and I want it to put it anywhere I want it,
Moz & FB let you do that.

FB is pretty close there.

And if the message window wasn't already open, it would then close the window.
That's one hell of a feature. You could do it in a moz/fb extension if you really wanted. Do you have any idea how much work it would be to make compatible with all the various instant messaging protocols and clients?

I want this browswer installed in a single folder of my choice (similar to Firebird), and not tangled up in the Windows folder with 13 registry entries.
I think even FB uses a few registry entries, but they are recreated. Moz can be installed like firebird - you don't actually need the installer. You can download "nightlies" and just unzip them somewhere. The installer is only for users who can't figure out how to unzip a zip file somewhere and create their own shortcuts.

I command someone to create a browser that does all of this for me 😀
How much will you pay me?

Caches already do that... the browser requests a file, but tells the server "I have this file as of january 4th", and the the server can either send the updates, or send back a HTTP 304 Not Modified message.

Not to my satisfaction =) I use to use a web page caching program when I had dialup, and visits to the page were instant when the page hadn't been modified... however, Anandtech's home page takes 3-4 seconds on average to load even if nothing has changed if I refresh the page 1 second later.

Either way, I want it cached on my hard drive and updated when I want it updated =)

Firebird .7 is a HUGE improvement over older versions of Firebird and Mozilla. If you haven't tried Firebird in a while, try it again. It's all I use. I did an Adaware check the other day after using nothing but Firebird .7 after a fresh format, for over 6 months, and it found 5 things on my computer, all were cookies that I let in myself. In the older days with IE, it would have found at LEAST 100+ things on my computer. I also don't get pop-ups, and I haven't found many sites that do not work in it. (other than windowsupdate.microsoft.com 😀)

I agree. At least have it off by default.

I am using 0.7 right now, but like most people, I'm spoiled and expect things as simple as web browsers to open pretty much as soon as I click the icon. Firebird takes 2-3 seconds... 2-3 seconds isn't much of course, but today, it's unacceptable for a web browser to take that long seeing as how hardware is so far ahead of software.

That 2-3 seconds is because it's not 2-3 seconds on boot and sticking around in memory. When you close it, you really close it.

You've lost your mind havent you. Buy a better computer if you want your browser to open in under 1 second from a cold start. Get 2 gigs of RAM, make a ramdrive and load your browser onto it at startup.

Firebird .8 is coming out at the end of the week or so. Get ready.
