I bought an Xbox 360 like 6-7 months before I got married and my wife just won't play it. All the buttons put her off, she's mentioned several times that she thinks she'd really like a wii (while I know I would not, I bought one when they first came out and sold it after 4 days). I'm contemplating buying one now though just for the fact that its a way to get her into video games. Once you get their foot in the door then you can get your PS3 and she might game with you (which depending on your personality could be a good or bad thing). You get a few games that are meant for 1 player only and a few for parties.
I've got a friend who used a DS to get his wife into games and now they play co-op Halo all the time online.
Plus now that there's Mario Kart I've got a good reason to wii on myself

I own a PS3. Honestly, I think the Wii is the better fit for you guys. It's a lot more fun to play.
The PS3 is awesome, but you'll have as much fun on the Wii and she'll have a lot more fun on the Wii.
Right now is the wrong time to buy a PS3 anyway; buy the MGS4 bundle when it comes out in another month or two. By then you'll be able to afford it, and you'll already have the Wii.

I plan on getting the MGS4 bundle on June 12th.
As for the wii, I really do agree with Jules............. I think the wii will be collecting dust in a few months if I go that route. I have a couple of friends and a nephew that has a wii so I have spent some time with it. It seems more like a novelty item to me. Sure its fun at first but I really am a stickler for poor graphics and I have no interest in the huge number of cartoon/anime/kid style games that are so prevelent on the wii. I like playing games like Madden, MLB, GT, and Orange box a lot more than I like Mario, Zelda, and Lego games. Sure some of the games I enjoy come on the wii but the crap graphics on a big HDTV are fugly as hell. Since I'm the one thats going to be playing this thing 90% of the time I want to get something that I enjoy. My wife is nto a huge gamer so she won't begrudge me of that. I just want to make sure I have a few games that she'll enjoy playing. She did enjoy playing NFS on my old xbox so I'm, sure she'll enjoy GRID (which I plan on getting for PS3). Plus the downloadable games should be enough to make her enjoy the PS3.
As for the 360, no way. Too expensive. Great game selection but by the time you buy the wireless and pay for Live it's more than the PS3. And no Blue Ray
Not an option. I'm only buying one console and it's not the 360.

After reading some of the OP's responses, I'd tell him to skip the consoles and get some marriage counseling. It's pretty clear that he doesn't care about his wife's needs, and superimposes his own on top of hers to justify his own decisions.
In the first post he asks for suggestions on games that would provide Wii-like experiences. Most people seem to be ignoring that though...

Well, it's confusing because the thread title and subtitle imply that he has yet to decide between a PS3 and a Wii and wants our advice in choosing. What he actually wants is advice on what PS3 games to get that might be fun for his wife.
In my experience, it only takes one really good game to suck someone in. With the Wii, it's Wii Sports. I got several Wii games when I owned one, but no matter what I got, my Wii parties always ended up with everyone playing bowling. I never said I was trying to decide between a PS3 and a wii. I said I was getting a PS3. Maybe I should've reworded the title a bit. (I'm getting a PS3 but my wife likes the wii better......Hows that?) Saying I don't care about my wifes needs and that I need counseling is rediculous. You've been been jaded from the sound of it. The reason I started the thread is because I'm trying to find out whats available on the PS3 that my wife might enjoy. I don't even suspect she'll game much at all, even if we had chosen a wii.
yeah I'm buying the PS3 primarily for myself. I know that and she knows that. She is not going to begrudge me of that. My wife buys stuff for herself all the time. My wife knows practically zero about games and electronics and stuff like that. All she knows is that she thinks the wii style of gaming is kinda cool. I'm hoping to find some PS3 games that she still also thinks is cool and can entertain her in the event she does want to play some games.

Is this even possible? What makes the Wii unique is its controller. It's a lot more fun swinging the Wii-Mote like a golf club in a golf game than using your thumb to move a tiny stick on a game pad.
The perfect solution would be for both Sony and Microsoft to bring out a similar controller for the PS3 and 360. Then we could have both next generation gaming with Wii-like fun in a single console.

PS3 has a few more casual games that she can play - most are of the PSN downloadable variety - but other games like Guitar Hero/Rock Band are also awesome and in my experience have a longer shelf life than anything on the Wii.
Does she (or you for that matter) play games a lot - is it a primary hobby of hers? Who plays games more? Are you planning on playing games together? Do you guys watch movies more than play games?

If that's the case there are motion-based PS3 arcade games. Not as fancy as the Wii, but they do exist. If possible I'd try to check them out before buying.
My coworker has some sort of motion-controlled bowling game he downloaded for the PS3. He says it uses the SIXAXIS just like the Wiimote (i.e. you hold the the controller like a bowling ball).
He also downloaded a "guide-the-ducks-through-the-maze" game which is pretty fun. You tilt the SIXAXIS to tilt the entire maze, and the ducks follow.
