I had one. She was the best pet I ever had. Saved her from drowning in the lake. She was only weeks old and missing a front paw. She would never have survived. I tried to take her to the rehabilitator and she told me she would never be capable of living in the wild and would spend her life in a cage on a shelf there. I figured I could give her a better home so I kept her. She became part of the family. Used to walk across the backs of the dogs to get from the couch to the chair. She came when you called her and would run right up me and sit on my shoulder. She played like no animal I have ever seen. She loved to attack my hands and we would sort of box. She would roll around my wrist like a jungle jim. She woul hang from my finger by her teeth and as razor sharp as they were she never once drew blood with them the entire time I had her and we played every day. I really miss here. I want another one.

My parents had one, long time ago before I was born. Well my dad was in the military and they had to move to Germany for a couple years so they had my grandparents (mothers parents) take care of the squirrel. Well the story goes that it got loose inside the house one day, and instead of putting it back in the cage, my grandpa being the old timer that he is cooked it and ate it instead. That story comes up ever couple years and family gatherings...its pretty funny.

My mouse told me that squirrels can't talk.

Crazy mouse...

No. She was very clean. Even when she was young if she was out of her cage and had to go she would find a towel or piece of paper to go on. It was funny because I never trained her. The only thing I taught her was the word NO and when she was doing something I did not want her to do she I would sternly say NO and she would stop what she was doing and run to me and jump on me, climb to my shoulder, and start nuzzling my ear. She was very smart and very very affectionate.

I have a baby northern flying squirrel. They need soooo much attention, but if trained properly, are the most amazing pets ever. I have had one for about 20 weeks now. I purchased it from Ratkateers Rodentry

Make sure they're legal in your state. They're not in NY...but that shouldn't stop you if you really want one.

<--- lives outside of NYC, goes to colleg to Rochester

But seriously, they're a ton of work. Make sure you have the time before getting one. They're nothing like dogs or the "conventional" pet.

Thanks for sharing your experience with a squirrel Ronstang! :)

And thanks for that link Futher. The gray fox is really tempting too lol.

Remember that all foxes spray their surroundings. So as incredibly cute as a fennec fox looks, I've heard they're high maintenance and should live outside.

Yeah just read that. And it says that some of the foxes release some sort of odor. I think I'll stick with a squirrel.

What happened to your squirell Ronstang? How long did you have her? One of the colleges here in Texas, don't remember which one, had a funeral recently for an albino squirrel. Surprised it survived as long as it did. It sorta became everyones pet. They showed pictures of it. In the end, a hawk got it. :(

Hope you're joking man.

I used to work with a guy who had one, I believe his was a female. From what I gather they're harder to raise as pets because of their instict to nest. This one burrowed out the inside of their couch and slept there.

My brother, a local cop, was called out one time where a little old lady found two babies and he picked them up (animal control doesn't work weekends). One died from the fall it took and I gave the other one to the guy I mentioned earlier. He and his wife are raising it.

The Southern Flying Squirrel is a VTE species in some areas - illegal for pets.

I'd check your local/state/provincial ministry of natural resources before trying to obtain a so-called "wild" animal as a pet.
