I'm sure it is illegal where you live or should be. Monkeys are FAR too intelligent of an animal to keep as a pet unless you plan on turning over a significant portion of your life to it, like almost as much as having a child. They are FAR too curious and mischievous and will destroy absolutely everything you own in the name of play. They can be really selfish and mean when it comes to getting your attention. This isn't the unconditional love a dog gives you. Plus they pee and shit over everything. Leave them in the jungles and on the savannah where they belong!

i had one when i was younger. it was fun while it lasted. it's a pet that walks itself... i don't remember any bad experiences with it except for that one day, i came home. i discovered it hung itself in the garden. I don't really know how that happened... if you pull the chain up, he could climb up the chain.

i was in elementary school back then in Taiwan, i'm sure it is illegal now. he had the entire garden to himself, chained to a tree.

it was a macaca.

edit: i don't remember it smelling that bad. it's small, and i think the ducks smelled worse.
i also don't remember it being destructive. when he's not chained in the garden, he's always 'leashed'.

One of my distant relatives owned a monkey back in the 60s. He bought it out of the back of a comic book. It would sit on his shoulder & shit constantly just like a hamster.

It's considered an exotic pet and you need a special license to have it. There was a funny little news item around here recently where someone had a monkey he was carrying around. Someone tried to pet it and got bitten by the monkey. Turns out the monkey wasn't his, he had "borrowed" it from a lady who claimed that the monkey was a "service" animal. So if you can convince a doctor that you need a monkey as your service animal, you can have one. I think the lady in question claimed it was for a psychological disorder where she could not go out in public without the monkey to keep her calm.

In regards to monkeys, do your research on what is involved with having them as a pet. I don't know what is involved but I know what I would look for. Consider all of the times that you may want to go out of town. Consider how they behave when left alone while you are at work. Consider their diet and what you need to do to feed them both as an infant and adult. Consider licenses. Consider whether or not your average Vet can take care of it's medical needs.

That's a good start.

Monkeys are unbelievably subject to various horrible diseases and injury, need extraordinarily specialized food, and constant, 24 hour attention. It will die in a week, max. One would cost a fortune, and I can't think of single species of monkey that it's legal to own without a difficult to get license in the first place.

My mom had a pet monkey when she was young. You are supposed to be able to teach them discipline like most mammal pets. I am wondering about providing room for them to play though. It's possible that having anything less than an A+ monkey gymnasium could cause them to get bored and cause more chaos in the house. If you got the room for that sort of thing then great. Otherwise....
