Since i have 1 day left with my TRU 25% off, decided to get a new console....

I hope to use this to replace my modded xbox, so media functionality is impt...

1. I definately want 8lueray or HDDvd, so the price diff narrows significantly.

2. Does either console upconvert DVDs?

3. Any SACD support?

4. Can either view/play streamed music and pictures over a network?

5. For those who own both, which do you prefer?

Gears of war looks awesome, but the 360 interface dosen't appeal to me and i dislike having to use two seperate drives to get high def dvd playback.

Well actually, the way i figure it, the ps3 will be cheaper...

PS3: $499 - $125 = $375

360: $399 - $100 + $200 = $499

1) Both next-gen consoles have Bluray or HD DVD support, so this one is a draw.

2) Neither console natively upconverts DVDs. However, playing DVDs in Yellow Dog Linux on the PS3 does allow you to upconvert/deinterlace using just about any codec or algorithm you prefer.

3) Don't know...

4) From what I understand, the 360 can stream music and videos (in the windows media format only) from a Windows Media Center server, or from an XP Machine with WMP 11. The PS3 can stream music and videos (in most formats) from any PC running Orb or most websites, and when running YDL can stream music and videos (even high-def clips) from just about anywhere.

5) I have a PS3 but no 360. Being totally honest the only thing that drew me to the PS3 was being able to run Linux (and everything else that comes with it) on it. The biggest things that irk me about the PS3 is the wifi connectivity (can't seem to get a consistently good signal-- though it could just be my router), and the controller-- I just don't like the feel of it. Before this I had an regular xbox, but no PS2 so I'm much more used to the xbox controller than the PS2/PS3 type-- it just hurts my hands after extended playing sessions.

If you're going for purely the HD-DVD/Blueray experience then yea perhaps. From my understanding right now, the PS3 does Blueray in 1080i/1080p or 480p. If you?re looking for 720p I think right now it downgrades the signal for some reason to 480p. If that's not so much an issue I would certainly look at the game lineup this year for both systems before diving in.

Edit: Scratch that it's actually the games on the scaler issue.

The two new consoles don't come close to the functionality of the modded xbox. They can stream, but the formats they can do it in are limited, and the interface is a pale shadow of XBMCs.

I want a box that can stream HD as well as XBMC more than anything else in the world, but it's just not out there right now.

Right now, the PS3 is beating the 360 as far as media streaming goes, but I wouldnt use either to replace XBMC. It's still a better DVD upconverter and network streamer than either of them. I am pretty sure PS3 can do SACD, though. But don't quote me.

I'm not sure what your definition of "natively" is (out of the box or without software changes) but with the VGA cables, the 360 will upconvert.

Check that, it's the games side.

Well it's part true. The PS3 won't upscale 720p to 1080i. The problem is most tube HDTV's do not support 720P. So basically your PS3 will only downscale the 720p to 480p.

Anyone with a DLP/Plasma/LCD that supports 720p is fine.

As for what to buy? Xbox 360...no question. We have a PS3 that was given to my son and I for Xmas. Neither one of us care for it that much. Xbox Live is lightyears beyond PS3. Not to mention that Sony really doesn't have that many exclusive games anymore and Xbox 360 has a bunch of good games coming out this year.

Naw, I don't think that's entirely correct. I believe with the latest 360 update it will up- convert but only over VGA if I recall. I will try to hunt down that info.

Xbox 360

/thread

I think the Xbox 360 is just perfect for a console. The Wii I'm not so sure about it being truly "next gen" and the PS3 is made by Sony and we all hate Sony (not to mention it's $600) :p

Well unfortunately I don't have a VGA input on my tv, nor DVI. I've only got HDMI & Component for higher resolution sources.

It seems like you've convinced yourself that PS3 is better. Otherwise, I would recommend the XBOX 360. I don't have either but people are having more fun with their 360 than PS3. Besides, the primary reason for a game console is to play games and the 360 is much better in so many ways.

Ah yes, out of luck on that one, for the moment.
