Also, everyone telling you to simply "get two" doesn't know cats very well. They are NOT naturally pack animals, and unless they grew up together in the same litter, the chances of any two random cats being best buds are slim (though possible) indeed.

I have lived with several cats over the years, and the females have tended to be some combination of flaky, withdrawn, neurotic and/or violent. The males have pretty much all been laid-back and fun to play with. If you want a pet that is companionable - more like a dog - I would recommend a male cat.
I don't necessarily agree with my good friend Perk that it's hard to get two cats to bond. My own experience has been that if they're laid back and friendly as individuals, they'll get along fine with other animals and befriend them. If they're shy or aggressive, they'll treat other cats this way.
