I found 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T new for about 28000 and I want it. I have no debt.

Going into debt scares me.... but my current car is winter beater status without the nice one for Spring Summer Fall..

Sucky part is I can't find a car that appeals to me. It's either a Magnum, 300C, Charger, or Challenger. Cameros are ugly, Mustangs backseats suck and I just don't like them, GTOs are passed their prime, and the G8 seems overpriced.

Hold onto the car you have and save money until you feel comfortable buying the car.

A large down payment will make the monthly payments small without going into a long term loan.

Or you can save up enough to buy a car outright without any debt.
 
Does it have to be new? I bet you can find cheap Charger R/T and Challenger R/Ts for cheaper than that. Should be relatively bullet proof, but dont go beyond the 2009 MY.
 
I don't get the "if you can't pay cash don't buy it" mentality. It's not like you're charging it on a credit card. Most auto loans are short terms like 3-5 years and with low interest rates if you have good credit. Who the hell has $28,000 laying around in cash anyway? Well, besides Alkemyst of course...

i got a 5yr loan on my car @ 3%...in the end, it's only costing me about $1500 in interest, so < $1/day in order to not pony up the full amount all at once. not a bad deal IMO.
 
I just bought a new mustang for .9&#37; for 48 months. Going to cost $500 interest (and I make >1% interest in my ING savings account anyway) so it's a wash. I think the challenger is so badass looking. I would have got one if the performance was close to the mustang.

When I bought my current car I got 1.9% financing for 5 years. Why the hell would you pay cash when you can get financing at 1.9%? I didn't even bother putting any money down on it. Didn't make any sense to do so. It is paid for now.

Hell, I got 4.9% financing on my motorcycle! 😀 I did put money down on it though and plan on paying it off early. I financed my last bike too and paid it off a year early. Sold it last month and put that money into my new bike.

I'm with you. I pay zero percent interest on my 2011 Civic. The loan is 100% free. Why would I pay cash?

Cars are fine if you need to finance. As long as that car is not a toy. Toys should always be paid for with cash unless you're getting 0%. If you can't pay for the toy, you don't need it or can wait til you have the cash.

Most motorcycles are toys. Only young kids or middle aged guys who can't afford the bike buy on credit. Same with boats except boats are bought by middle aged guys. Luckily interest rates are favorable now that helps to minimize the mistake.

Bull, a good friend of mine bought his Ducati and financed part of it. $7500 down and paid the rest off over the next year or so.

No reason to tie up that much cash at once IMO.

I've done the same thing with televisions and 0 interest for 6 months. Buy it on credit and pay it off within the terms and you're golden.

Those are awful choices. Get the Challenger, hands down. And it better be the V8. 😛

No one is saying you can't do it. People don't always make the best choice when it comes to finance. As long as you're happy, it's all good. You're the one paying for it.
 
I think the Challenger is a beautiful car, but I would definitely wait until you can afford a used SRT-8 of some sort. They are just pure badassery even if they finish last.
 
If we're going to suggest alternates:

I'd like to point out that you can pick up a nice low miles Viper for about what that new Challenger costs, & in 5 years the Viper will be worth roughly what you paid for it.

The Challenger is a nice highway cruiser or awesome looking muscle car. It's not the fastest. The SRT is pointless unless you track the car (the brakes are better), but the car is barely faster unless you buy a 2011 or 2012. The difference is if you plan on modding it the 6.1L is a better platform. The SRT is also slower than most everything else as a track car.

I think if you buy a Challenger:
1) Make sure you can afford it comfortably.
2) Pick your favorite color.
3) Don't wrap it around a tree.
4) Realize you aren't the fastest and just have fun, don't street race.
