did you know?
Staten Island (the least populated borough in NYC) is almost as populated as the state of wyoming?

Staten Island (Richmond County): 464,573 (2005 est)
State of Wyoming: 509,294 (2005)

i've been living in NYC for the past 15 years and haven't been to a lot of the touristy area. i was on the WTC about 3 times before it collapsed. and I've never been to a lot of the museums, or been to the top of the Empire state building. I know a lot of NY'ers who haven't been up to WTC as well. a shame, eh?

NYC is one of the best cities in America in my opinion. I live in PA so I've driven up there a couple of times and my favorite time to go was in winter. Snow is falling, roasted nuts are for sale, Christmas decorations are up, it's just a great experience. When you go see if you can get tickets to a Broadway play. All of them are great and the shows are excellent. NYC is also a walking city. Cabs are pretty much everywhere but you'll want to walk around a bit to see everything. If you want you can go to the top of the Empire State building though I didn't do that because they were doing some renovations or something. There are a lot of good restraunts to eat at, especially theme ones. I ate at the Jeckyll & Hyde Club and Mars 2112. Both were a lot of fun, and thefood was pretty good at both. If I think of anything else I'll let you know, but I hope I was helpful 🙂.

Can i just say that please...please...please if you're going to come to nyc, do not hit those two places...there are waaay better restaurants than those two, or any big family restuarant. I walk by times square and all i see are tourists crowding the olive garden, planet hollywood, fridays....for those prices (especially in times square) you can go to a decent 3 star place and get exceptional food

Like what?

Quaint fishing villages, a nature preserve, and prime beach front property that is just a field of weeds.

fishing village
the beach

They aren't the best examples but I hope you get the idea.

Thats not really considered NYC, its basically long island. Nobody from Far Rockaway says they are from NYC.

But Howard Beach, Broad Channel, and Far Rockaway ARE all parts of NYC (Queens). Like I said above, "you'll pass through areas you'll never believe are part of NYC."

To anyone who lives in the area, have you seen pretty much everything there is to see? How long would it take to hit all the good sights? And how physically big is NYC? 5? 10? 20 miles across?

I would say it would take about a month of 8 hour days to see all the good sights in NYC.

Unless by "see" you mean the building housing a sight is visible from a few blocks away at the hot dog stand.

I lived in NY for 2 years. NJ for 1 year. and 10 Years in Vancouver BC

I now miss NYC but when I was there I always wanted to get out of there.

As far as restaurants - go to CARMINES !!! It's one of the best Italians restaurants anywhere. I'd recommend the old/historic-looking one next to Central Park. Can't remember the address, I visited the Museum of Natural History and walked across the park to get there (a bit of a hike).

You'll need to go with someone else IMHO, the portions are far too large for one person. Ex. I ordered veal scalopinni and shared it with my wife and son and there was still some left over. Because the portions are soo large, it ends being really inexpensive for what you get.

Oh, go there for lunch, it gets really crowded and is sometime hard to get into for dinner.

Enjoy your trip.

How about some suggestions for lunch/brunch? We're doing Kittichai Friday and a picnic Thursday, so most dinners are accounted for...if nothing else, 2 hot dogs will be my hangover cure.

If you are there for saturday brunch, my choice would be dim sum in chinatown. I liked oriental gardens but jing fong or similar were also being considered.
