I wanna visit NYC

To anyone who lives in the area, have you seen pretty much everything there is to see? How long would it take to hit all the good sights? And how physically big is NYC? 5? 10? 20 miles across?

NYC is awesome. Be prepared to spend alot of money. Just dont bring your new toy 😉

Manhattan is about 13.5 Miles and 2.5 Miles Wide.

Major Attractions: Time Sqaure, Soho/Village, Seaport, World Trade/Financial Center, Central Park, ChinaTown and others.

I would save 2-3 days you can pretty much hit all the good sights because everything is connected by the subway system.

NYC is freaking sweet.
Go there during the week, there are shows you can get into for free, like Letterman. I got to see Natalie Portman when i went 😀.
Everything else there is insane, great city, cant wait to go back.

I think I would love to visit but no way would I live there, way too crowded, not to mention all the crap that comes with a big city, crime, trashyness etc.

If you just hit the sites, take one of the tours. You can't get around the city quickly without knowing how, to many one way streets. Each Museum will take about 2 days for just a cursory glance, same with the Bronks Zoo.

You get used to the crowds. Manhattan is only trashy in some spots, and NYC in general is the safest big city in the country.

NYC is one of the best cities in America in my opinion. I live in PA so I've driven up there a couple of times and my favorite time to go was in winter. Snow is falling, roasted nuts are for sale, Christmas decorations are up, it's just a great experience. When you go see if you can get tickets to a Broadway play. All of them are great and the shows are excellent. NYC is also a walking city. Cabs are pretty much everywhere but you'll want to walk around a bit to see everything. If you want you can go to the top of the Empire State building though I didn't do that because they were doing some renovations or something. There are a lot of good restraunts to eat at, especially theme ones. I ate at the Jeckyll & Hyde Club and Mars 2112. Both were a lot of fun, and thefood was pretty good at both. If I think of anything else I'll let you know, but I hope I was helpful 🙂.

And it isn't all that crowded in certain parts. Staten Island is still relatively suburban when compared to the rest though in a couple of years it'll probably turn into another congested mess if developers have their with it.

Yeah you guys may not think it's not crowded, but I live in a city with 50,000, and the whole state has less people than NYC.

What about hotels? I'm sure there are hundreds, but what areas to stay/avoid? I got burned in DC: reserved a Days Inn 2 blocks away from the Grand Hyatt and Marriot, and I got scared when I saw the place. Got a room at the Marriott for $$$$$.

Any good resources to get something decent and relatively cheap, in a safe area.

I've lived here for 4 years and still haven't seen 99% of what there is to see. What I have done though is traveled the entire subway system, and at least in the above ground elevated sections, you get a good overview of those parts of the city. For a real shock, ride the A out to Far Rockaway. You'll pass through areas you'll never believe are part of NYC.

How many of those "40 top attractions" can you see in one day? I don't think that many. Are you sure you could do $54 worth of stuff in one day?

The best money saving tip is to take the subway and/or walk instead of using taxis.

I'm not denying that it's crowded. I've been to a few other big cities in the States and in Europe, but I haven't seen anything like Manhattan crowds.

If you go to even 3 places of those listed there, you will end up saving money. Trust me.
Entry fee is like $15 - $25 almost everywhere.
