I wake up to my hard disk making a strange noise.

Today I woke up and heard a strange buzzing noise. I went around the room listening and tracked it to the hard disk in my IBM Thinkpad T40. It's an IBM/Hitachi Travelstar 40GNX 40GB 5400RPM. It still seems to work fine and Active Smart reports everything is ok. If I tilt the laptop I can hear the noise change slightly. I'm guessing it's a slight problem with the motor?

I'm debating if I should RMA the drive or keep using it. I do have a spare Fujitsu 30GB (that came with the laptop) that I could use. Luckly I did a backup last night so if it should drop dead I won't lose much. BTW, there has been some construction outside recently (because we're putting an addition on the house) and I'm wondering if maybe the jolts from that hurt the hard drive?

I'd RMA that drive while it was still in warranty. Good job on keeping your data backed up, looks like you covered yourself properly here.

Well I took the Hitachi out and put back in the original Fujitsu for a while. After a few hours I put the Hitachi in my old Inspiron 8200 and it didn't make the noise. I put it back in the Thinkpad and now it seems to be working properly again. I guess for now I'll just keep using it though I'll be sure to backup more often. BTW, does anyone know how to run IBM/Hitachi's diagnostic utility off anything other than a floppy? I don't have a floppy for this laptop so I can't figure out any other way to run it. I do have a CD/DVD burner as well as a memory key.
