I Touch and I Phone

I would love to get an iphone, but sadly I am on Verizon for quite awhile. I only pay $15 a month because I'm on my family's shared plan. I can't justify the 85+ a month an iphone would cost. But I'm also in the market for an mp3 player. So, silly question here, but are the itouch's and the iphone's the same device sans the phone capabilities? I'd have to carry around two devices (cell and itouch), but I wouldn't mind.

Thanks!

Ah so you can't hit up webpages on the itouch? Ok. I thought you could. What about all the aps, etc? And don't you pay $30/mo for the itouch for web access? My friend got one and I believe he has to.

you can...it has built in wifi, but no edge/3G connection (obviously, there isnt any phone in it). and nope, there isnt any monthly fee for it. wifi is free just like any other device or laptop. the ipod touch was built specifically for people who wanted that interface, but DIDNT want to pay monthly for it. apple now sees that people love the touch, but want all the features that the iphone has (mic, camera, gps), but deliberately leaves them out so they can purchase an iphone and be locked to gay-t&t for 2 years...🙂

You can use it to surf. The Touch has 802.11G but not 3G, so you need to be near a hot spot as opposed to anywhere. I also believe that the Touch DOES have a mic, since you can use Skype with it. The iPhone is still a better deal though IMO if you can get a good package.

iPod Touch does not have a mic, but you can use the headset with it (I believe) and it will take the mic input.

The iPod Touch is also thinner, you can get a higher capacity, and I believe has slightly better battery life.

Can't really beat the convenience of the iphone... unless you can't get a signal. Not that much of a problem unless you're in a big city though.

I was actually going to say headset first. lol

Yep, the iPhone definitely is more convenient.

I appreciate the replies. It's hard for me to justify the $100+ a month an iphone will usually cost when I have it made at $15 a month for my current Verizon LG Dare 🙂

The ITouch looks awesome though. I may have to pick one up here soon. I've never owned an Apple mp3 player, I've always gone with Cowon. The S9 looks nice but at that price point I think I'd rather have the Touch.

If, at least once a day, you say 'Gosh, i want to look that up', then trust me, the iPhone mops the floor with your LG Dare. I have used both and I can honestly say that the LG Dare is a poor knockoff, of an old Xerox copy, of a bad imitation, of a cheap replica of the iPhone.

It is saddled with Verizon's crap, which is fine on my dumbphone, but when you're making a device that is intended to go against the iPhone (you can't say that it isn't) then you need to go all the way.

I can completely understand the advantages of being on a family plan however.

*edit: And god, I hate to nitpick... but it is the iPod Touch, not the iTouch. Another nitpick (not related to this thread) is that the computer is a Mac, the number associated with your ethernet port is a MAC.

I am in same boat as you. Trying touch right now really like it and the jailbreak came out last weekend.

but it is lacking, it really can't multitask very well, even with jailbrake and backgrounder multi apps sucks.

But the apps you can get for it are awesome. I was in new orleans this weekedn and needed directions, it will triangulate your position via wifi spots. Very cool got turn by turn directions. Mail with gmail works great, and calendar, contacts all synced two ways.

Lots of cool stuff. However, I am no audiophile or anything but i can tell a difference in audio quality between this and sansa clip. But i dont really care. Might just be apple headphones vs some jvcs? or some cheap earbuds i got.

I would goto walmart but it and try it 🙂. Like im doing. I told the sales guy i was gonna do this. Cause right now i use n800 and want a replacement. Unfortunately it doesnt seem the itouch will fit this need yet. Still needs camera, mic and better multitasking. Though after these two weeks with it i will miss it.

No doubt...I agree 100%. The Dare is pretty much crap. And yes, I do say that to myself quite frequently....about looking stuff up. Hmmm...now you got me thinking 🙂

The ipod Touch has GPS? I thought that was one of the differences between that and the iphone.

The iPhone won't cost $85 more a month than your LG Dare. Doesn't Verizon force you to take a data plan on the Dare as well?

Nope...there's a data option for the Dare, but I choose not to use it as the browser on the Dare is less than desirable. I pay $15/month to my parents for the use of my Dare. Unlimited calls and texts. It's a sweet deal. So the iphone would have to be INCREDIBLE for me to want to shell out the money for the phone and increase my monthly cell phone bill by that much.

no gps, just the map programs does that. Pretty cool though. It is very accurate though, it was when i was walking around new orleans. The only problem was when you lost connection you lost your map. Probably a way to fix but i dunno.

Actually, if you reeaallly want to pick nits, it's "iPod touch" (no 'the' and lowercase 't').
🙂

From what I have read, the Tom Tom Car Kit will work with the Touch, so if you bought the Tom Tom software and car kit you could have a turn by turn GPS (at least in the car). Personally, I think I would just buy a cheap dedicated GPS but to each his own.

Also, if you are interested in games, I would stay away from the lowest price Touch. It has different (slower) internals than the other models.

Touche salesman. However, can we all agree that the article-less names that Apple uses are stupid? I mean, how silly is it, in conversation, to say something like 'I just went to AT&T and bought iPhone'.

$15/mo for unlimited minutes & texts is epic. This is the rare case where I am going to have to recommend NOT to get an iPhone. The new iPod touches are beasts and you will have a lot of fun with one.

(Edit: like KeithP said, make sure you don't get the base model)

iPod Touch has all apps but the question is are you going to use those apps since you said you wanted mp3 player so I assumed you wont be needing apps so I thinki you can get iPod Nano or iPod Shuttle they are very cheaper.
