Hmm how do you know he is right? One other admitted he read it the same way I did.

I just don't see how you'd total you own vehicle at a $800 repair to go to a $5000 vehicle. To me just seems going back into the fire.

but seriously you need to take your own advice Sparky.

Lack of economic comprehension as well? If the delta between the current value, and the repaired value is < $800, why would he spend the money to fix it?

I do take my own advice. When I make a mistake, I admit it. You, obviously, do not.

His brakes are dead, the repair is MORE than the vehicle is worth, thus it is "totaled." A car need not be in an accident to be "totaled."

Face it, you read it wrong and jumped to errant conclusions. Hey, we've all done it... Apologize for being a prick about it and move on.

It's brakes #1, and you just get rid of a car on your own, and insurance company 'totals' it.

A car does not have to be declared "totalled" by an insurance company for an owner to consider it "totalled" because the repairs are more costly than the best market value of the car.

Just quit it already. You miss read it... that's cool, we've all done it. But you need to move on and stop insulting others over your own mistakes.

Like when my friend wrecked his mtn. bike and tells me he "totaled" it?
Or when one of our admins came by the other day and told me the file system on one of our servers was "totaled".
No insurance company involved. It's just slang that's grown well beyond insurance companies writing off a car.

Au contraire...like I and another has said...he is assuming what the poster meant...he decided to butt heads on this.

He, like you, are merely attempting to validate their pathetic existance via countering me.

For the record the first post here is ambiguous. Got it? eh?

Original Post:

I was driving a few days ago when my brakes just quit working. I pushed on the brake and it went straight to the floor with hardly any resistance. The brake repair (which I did get a second opinion on) was gonna be $800-900, which is more than the value of the car. It's not worth it to get it fixed, because it's a crappy bronco from the 80's that is about to choke up and die from a mess of other problems.

There is NOTHING ambiguous about this. His brakes are shot, the cost of fixing them is more than the value of the car. Thus he considers the car "totalled" (and rightly so).

How could he have been ANY more clear about that???

I had got the car for free because the owner was a friend of the family and had no need for it anymore. I figured that I would drive it until it had it's first big problem, and then get another semi-nice one with the money I'd been saving. I wasn't going it spend $800 getting it repaired when it would need another repair not too far off. It was just a step above a farm vehicle anyway. Well, I took it to the shop, and the guy said that the brake system was almost completely shot. Somethin about the rotors needing to be replaced, etc. So, I pull out the savings fund, and see that my budget is about $5,000.

If it is a 2 then yea its junk, but if it is a Full size V8 with little to no rust then fix it. Also how can you need $800 in brakes for a older American truck???
And if it is a full size with little rust then I will take it off your hands and get it out of your way ;)
No charge :)

As for replacment look at a Trailblazer or GMC Envoy. I don;t know if they have come down in price enough yet but you never know, eBay?
My 1987 Crown Vic needed the front brakes done last year. New rotors, pads, brake fluid, etc. With taxes it came $435 CDN.

My rear brakes needed to be done last month. They needed shoes, wheel cylinders, spring kit and general reassembly. Total cost: $325 CDN.

'cause the car's a piece of crap and he's looking for any excuse to get rid of it.

Believe me, I know the feeling :D

I don't think the term "totalled" should be applied here though...

Alkemyst you got

PWNED

gee you are cool...

Anyway.

http://www.soderblom.net/bronco/tech/brakes/ shows most of the brake job at $300. Rotors should be about $40-50 each (x2) and drums about $50-70 depending on size with the linings and pads for the fronts at about $75-100....so $800 is probably right on the money with labor...

If the bronco was trash then yeah it's be a waste.

if you're going to drive poorly maintained cars that could fail at any time, please at least make them small cars instead of battering rams on stilts.

I use to have my own shop, Marlins Auto, and also my grandmother use to drive a 87 Crown Vic.

Front Brake job: Rotors $40 each Pads $25 Brake fluid/Cleaner/grease $20 Labor $120 = Grand Total $245

Rear Brake job: Shoes $15 Wheel Cyl's $25 Spring kit $15 Brake fluid/Cleaner $10 Labor $100 = Grand Total $165

Of course those are american prices, this is an american web-site and all so only fair ;)

If I did both front and rear at the same time it would be less, but those are general estimates. Also take the labor off and do it yourself for almost nothing.
