This also works for converting a PCI-E into an AGP card.
Really?
yeah definately. i'm still using AGP, so I just cut to fit my PCI-e card.

Oh yeah. I upgraded an entire computer lab this way -- of course it was much quicker since I just took the whole batch of cards to the shop guys and told them what to cut off.
None whatsoever, and it's even air-cooled with no fan. Remember, OS X itself can almost be considered a "3D program". The GUI is accelerated using Quartz Extreme.Originally posted by: LuNoTiCK
Question. Can you run 3d programs without any problems? No pixellation?
Yeah, but I have no idea how the other layers are organized. It has been said there could have just as easily been a power plane in there.Originally posted by: Eli
Why is it surprising that it still works? It's obvious that you didn't cut off any important bits, just some ground plane.
This is just a backup (Quartz Extreme-capable) card. I have another card coming.Originally posted by: MechaSheeba
Cutting through traces like that is a pretty bad fire hazard man.

At least you didnt trim down a VGA PCI-e card to fit into a PCI slot like some guy did with a 7800GTX

Yeah, me too.Originally posted by: randomlinh
the cube form factor would work so nicely now... mac mini double sized, real video card and HD... core 2 duo... i'd buy it...

It's one thing to cut off the corner of a $20 card that's destined for the dumpster anyway, but cutting off the main interface of a frakkin' PCI-e 7800 GTX?!?.

I thought this would be related to that person that tried to fit a video card even though the interfaces were incompatible...
Forgot if it was AGP -> PCI-E or vice versa... It was funny.
it was worse: a PCI-E 7800 something into an old dell that only had PCI slots. $300 went down the drain for that.
fvcking idiots...link?
I remember that thread. He had pictures of it, too... probably a year or more ago though, so it is long burried somewhere.

I don't see what the problem is. those traces weren't going anywhere. Anyone actually use those pins on the vid card? ever?
