Though, I wouldn't call them a "fundy" church, they're just downright insane.

Westboro is legit crazy--but in a way, they are trolls. Whats his face, Phelps? is a civil rights lawyer by trade, and his family are also all lawyers.

History seems to show that they never really engaged in such religious fervor until relatively recently. It very much appears that the Westboro Baptists church--the name, the compound that they run, and the organized protests that they engage in--is nothing more than a shell for lawsuit baiting. They are extremely successful in filing and winning lawsuits, and they will continue to inflame for as long as it fattens their pockets.

It does seem likely that any religious intent, and belief system of prejudice, is mere subterfuge in order to game the system. Very cunning, very successful RL trolls.
