Yesterday my GF and I went shopping for engagement rings. We bought a .90 carat round diamond with a very nice white gold band. It's not official yet but I think I'll be giving it to her on New Years Eve.
We are thinking of a date of Oct. 2006.

that is all

It's pretty much set that we will get married, I wanted her to pick the ring so it would be exactly
what she wanted.

you should wait a long time to give it to her, just to mess with her head.

This is exactly what I did to my wife.

I asked her in the butterfly room in the museum. We were alone sitting on the rocks surrounded by live butterflies. I thought it was quite romantic.

1. I hate shopping (for anything)
2. I'd rather she picks what she wants
3. It's one less decision I have to make ;)

i dunno man. im not all for the girl knowing its coming. IMO a proposal should catch her by surprise. and if you do your homework and know a thing or two about your SO's taste in jewellery, you'd be confident in buying a ring and knowing that she'd like it.

edit: but congratulations! it is a big step.

Wow, just setting yourself up right from the beginning to be a completely whipped hubby. Nice going.

lol at some of the responses... anyway, it's definitely a big step. Do it in steps... engage first, no need to set a date just yet - depends on what's going on in your life like school, etc. We were engaged for almost 2 years before we even started thinking about a date and planning.

BTW, I just found out this past weekend that a friend of ours went to pick out the engagement ring with the wife-to-be. 2.5 carats from Tiffany's. $27000. My jaw dropped. I just don't get it. There's a difference between spending a lot of money and spending a lot of money wisely. Just... ouch.

Congrats!! You did the right thing by shopping for it with her. I totally surprised my wife 10 yrs ago with her engagement ring and found out 5 yr later that it "wasn't exactly what she would have picked out but she loves it anyway..."

Way to go, IMO you'll both be happier for picking it out together...:

I follow this philosophy as well... the surprise was the best part.
