Nick Cage was signed to act in a modern-day Superman movie (which I believe was penned by "Clerks" creator Kevin Smith and set to be directed by Tim Burton, with Chris Rock as Jimmy Olson [!]; the working title was either "Superman Lives" or "Superman Reborn", and when the project was cancelled he was paid several million dollars as a result of the cancellation. As far as I know the project is dead for good.
It's dead. Kevin Smith gave a talk at my school last year and confirmed it. The producer was a crackpot and wanted all these weird, campy changes and the studio didn't like the script...it was a total mess.
Nicholas Cage is one of my FAVORITE guy actors,
don't get me wrong, but I definitely cannot
imagine The Man Of Steel as The Man With A
Receding Hairline.
Too bad to miss Chris Rock as Jimmy, though - that would have been a hoot. Apparently Keven Smith is a hardcore comic-book geek and I still have high hopes that he may deliver a superhero script in the future - Spiderman, anyone?
Yeah, I believe they went through tons of script changes and no one could agree and then they dropped kevin smith as the director in favor of someone else. And it was all downhill from there. Kevin Smith would have ROCKED on the new superman script. Did any of you read his stuff in Daredevil? good stuff!
The original Superman was one of the best pop-cult movies ever made! Nick Cage, the best directors and all the money from Fort Knox couldn't best it...even if Stephenie Seymour played Lois Lane...though then of course it would be much closer...
