I thought halogen bulbs were supposed to be ultra sensitive to contaminants.

What's all the stuff about not touching them, and such? Seems like BS to me.

I've been driving around with a broken headlight lens for the last 7 months, and my headlight still works.. Wind, rain, snow, road grime...

😕

its not bs.
the oils on your skin will blister the glass because they have a high heat capacity and will heat up enough to soften the glass.

we have to be very carefull with the lamps we use in theater, if you touch them they will die quickly.

So is it just skin oil that you have to be concerned about? Because my bulb is filthy.. haha. Maybe it just won't last as long as normal.

It really has to do with oils specifically since they trap heat more than just dirt. Motor oil would be bad too, not just skin oil.

Chances are though that you're not getting much oil in to the bulb, just dirt, which doesn't hold the same amounts of heat.

The secret is just not replying when I have no clue. 😉 That way it looks like I know what I'm talking about in every post.

yeah, it's about the oil. must deepfry em or something, or non uniform temp across the envelope, or.. i dont know.

The piddly little 60-watt halogen lamps can take a little bit of grime. The 575- to 1000-watt halogen lamps that they use for theatrical stage lighting must be kept clean, or they will blister and burst with the slightest bit of oil.
