I thought Athlon 64's were supposed to use a new heatsink retension mechanism (like P4's)

I took a look at a retail box A64 and saw a socket clip bar going through the heatsink. I thought they were supposed to use a setup like the P4's do. Or what's the deal?

They use the old school clip on one side, but the other has a locking mechanism that requires no tools. It's a pretty decent system (and a huge improvement over previous designs), but I still think the P4 stock retention is better.

It is a similar system to the P4. It just happens to use flanges...that are NOT on the socket and are very strong. If you get the CPU and need to install it, it isn't hard to find out.
You install the CPU, then attach the HSF to the retention bracket with the clip. Then you rotate the catch thingie until it latches to the little flange on one of the sides of the bracket. You can find heatsink pictures at newegg or SVC. Here's a big socket picture to help visualize it:
