down with the penny, but keep paper money.

QFT.

Why not have $.50 bills and $.25 bills? $1 bills get the most use, so they only last 1.5 years on average. It costs money to keep printing them in enormous quantities. If $2 bills in common usage you'd never have more than one dollar coin in your pocket... not so bad. Take away the $2 bill and at most you'd have 4 dollar coins in your pocket. Still not so bad.

that's what I hate the most about europe (or at least I did... haven't been there since the euro was 100% adopted, but I really hated having to carry all those franc and lire coins on me)

It's worse now, because they have a 1-euro coin and a 2-euro coin, so you always have a crapload of heavy coins jingling in your pocket everywhere you walk.

I agree with you 100%, but people are fvcking idiots so it'll be a long time before it happens. Even though it costs more than a penny to produce a penny! People are morons! They think retailers will find a way to use it to screw you.

You think they wouldn't?

Having gone through a currency transition, I can guarantee that wages don't increase, but suddenly everything costs more.

And who cares how much it costs to produce a penny, they're in circulation for decades.

No.

Even the penny?? come on we should just get rid of it and round to the nearest 5 cents. And if you think you are getting ripped off, do you think we should start using hay pennies again so we can not lose .5 cents on most of our transactions?

The penny can go for all I care, but not dollar bills.

Watch Ghost in the Shell 2nd gig ep 20, about how some dude made billions from taking that small change that wasn't added because the yen had numbers past the decimal point.

why would you do that when you could watch office space?

Do whatever we do now for .8 cents

I am thinking you give back 2 cents.

Since you left out your superior reasoning... I am just gonna go on what's correct and not completely stupid.

BTW, the # 99 is a key marketing tool... gl convincing thousands of companies to back you.

We mint about 7 BILLION pennies per year at a cost of 1.5 cents apiece. Sure, the cost savings won't even buy us a single fighter jet, but it's stupid to keep wasting our time and money with a coin that has no real value. There used to be a half cent coin too, and we're doing fine without it.

I'd rather just use a secure contactless eletronic system. My amex does this and it's pretty cool, just wave the card at the reader and it's done. No paper, coins, or even giving anyone my card.

Read it again. .8 cents. 8/10 of a cent. You know when you buy gas and the price is x.xx9? There's rounding involved there.

Here's how it would work - for cash transactions, 1 or 2 pennies would round down. 3 or 4 pennies would round up. Rounding would occur at the end of the transaction. Suppose a retailer tries to "screw" you by pricing someting at $.98 - ZOMG IT WILL ALWAYS ROUNDUP! But if you buy 2 $.98 items it's $1.96 - ZOMG IT WILL ROUND DOWN! Retailers will keep their $x.99 pricing, and the world will not end. On average, in half of all transaction you will come out ahead, and in half of all transactions the retailer will come out ahead. A net difference of ZERO.

Credit/check transactions could still have $.01 precision. Doesn't matter since you don't need pennies.

The world would not end if we did away with the penny. Nothing bad would happen if we did away with the penny. The only thing keeping the penny alive is that people are stooopid.
