I think we should get rid of the dollar bills and use coins instead

Even the penny?? come on we should just get rid of it and round to the nearest 5 cents. And if you think you are getting ripped off, do you think we should start using hay pennies again so we can not lose .5 cents on most of our transactions?

We should get rid of the penny since it now costs more to produce one than the actual value of said coin.

Having said that, I have no viable alternative to the penny and how to make change.

The penny can go for all I care, but not dollar bills.

The "paper" (actually a blend of cotton and linen) used to make US paper money comes from one company - Crane & Co. They have had the contract for over 120 years. And half of what they supply to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is used to make $1 bills.

60% of their employees are involved in making the paper for US currency. They are based in the state whose Senators are John Kerry and Ted Kennedy.

With that in mind, do you really think there's any chance they are going to eliminate the $1 bill? Ain't no way.

That's true for nickels as well.

Watch Ghost in the Shell 2nd gig ep 20, about how some dude made billions from taking that small change that wasn't added because the yen had numbers past the decimal point.

Yeah, I've always wanted to carry a couple hundred dollars worth of coins around in a sack...they make a nice clinking sound when you walk into a saloon and drop them on a bar.

coins = heavy, harder to sort than bills (imo)

that's what I hate the most about europe (or at least I did... haven't been there since the euro was 100% adopted, but I really hated having to carry all those franc and lire coins on me)

I agree with you 100%, but people are fvcking idiots so it'll be a long time before it happens. Even though it costs more than a penny to produce a penny! People are morons! They think retailers will find a way to use it to screw you.

The point about strippers is good though... I ain't shelling out fivers to a stripper!

Now, if the $2 bill came into common use that would be acceptable.
