I think the pain is better than Vicodin. Arrggghh!!!

I had surgery on my knee for an ACL (that thingy in the front of your knee from the bottom of your kneecap to your shin, in laymans terms) and some cartilage a while back. My knee has never been the same since. I was trying to move some furniture around on Sat and yesterday I could barely walk so I put some ice on it and took a vicodin. I was ok with the tablet I took in the morning, then I took one about 6 hours later. I got so nauseous it was pathetic, and it lasted from 2pm until I went to sleep at 11pm. The bonus is the whole constipation thing, LOL. (narcotic analgesics do that to you)

So here I am today, in total pain again, but not really wanting to take a pain pill. The horror of it all... :Q

I forgot to mention that I had a deadline to finish some website updating that I had to finish by this morning. I had to get up really early this morning to do it because I was so sick yesterday.

I took a Vicodin around 7:30 one evening for some back pain and I could hardly focus on a show I was watching from 9 to 10.

I fell asleep and had the most whack dreams.

You can break them, but your blood levels will not get high enough to do any good. If it does, it would only last a very short time.

When I got my wisdom teeth out a few years ago I woke up and took 2 Vicodins on a empty stomach....bad idea.... WIthin a half hour I puked big time, lots of blood - not good to be vomiting with fresh stitches.

On the other hand, it is fun to save them for when you're better and have a beer or two with one, hehe...

(At least that's what I've heard 😉 )

I had a prescription to that and percoset when I had some wisdom teeth cut out..two different times.

Neither one really did anything for me..stop the pain nor make me sick or anything. Only took them like the first day and then disposed of the pills

Try one-half of a Vicodin tablet or 3/4 or whatever dosage takes the edge off the pain without causing nausea.

Just because the pill comes in one dosage doesn't mean it can be reduced. (The reverse is generally not true . . . do NOT increase the dosage without consulting your MD.) 😉

And drink LOTS of water . . . it will minimize the constipation.

I just came off one year of painkillers (Vicodin/Ultram/ prescribed 3200Mg Ibuprofin daily) due to a second automobile whiplash accident. Fortunately, I am in Hawaii completing alternative (Traditional Chinese Medicine) treatment which is proving successful again (heck, I'm back to working nearly full time and also back to surfing).

EDIT: The drug/blood level is an AVERAGE. Some people are far more sensitive to Vicodin than others . . . also, if you keep taking it long term you will develop a tolerance (eventually 1 - 1/2 were required to have the same pain-killing effect as 3/4 in the beginning for me).

I was on Hydrocodone after i broke my foot. Wow, that stuff was crazy... My friends were saying that i couldnt finish sentences and i was going nuts, luckly i dont remember anything that happened for the 2 days i was taking it...

Didn't you see the "take with food" sticker on the pill bottle? --Mwilding

I really am a paramedic you know. I give morphine (as well as about 30 other drugs) and am educated in how pharmacology works. I have not had any vicodin in over two years so I don't have any tolerance right now. And yes, I took it with food. My main point was "pain vs nausea" I appreciate the input and suggestions, don't get me wrong. 😀

I am going to bite the bullet and take one now because it is killing me. If you don't see me around here for a while, I am laying on the couch with a bucket.

BTW, hydrocodone (with acetaminophen, the acetaminophen increases the effect of the hydrocodone) is vicodin.

Ahhh ok, makes sence... My dad is a pharmasist but hes buzy at work right now, so i didnt want to call and ask 🙂

be very careful doing this, this is probably ok with this medicine, but with some medicines this will get you into lots of trouble, I have had medicines that say specifically do not break, crush or chew, this can cause serious side effects if you don't know what you are doing

The clue is the score line dividing the medicine in half.
🙂

EDIT: **Disclaimer** All my comments here reflect my personal experience and is not intended to influence anyone in their medicine taking. I lived for a long time with that pain vs. nausea choice. One way way to customize my prescription dosage. Another was to get a particularly engrossing video game . . . and sleep alot. 🙂

mmm Vicodin. The only fun part about getting my wisdom teeth taken out. It was almost worth the anguish. 😉

Didn't take long for it to become habit-forming, though. After I stopped it cold I had trouble sleeping for the next couple of weeks.

<< (that thingy in the front of your knee from the bottom of your kneecap to your shin, in laymans terms) >>

No wonder your knee hurts so bad...they attached your tendon graft to your knee cap! lol! The ACL connects the femur to the tibia and has no involvement with the knee cap. They likely took the tendon graft from your patellar tendon.

<< I got so nauseous it was pathetic, and it lasted from 2pm until I went to sleep at 11pm. The bonus is the whole constipation thing, LOL. (narcotic analgesics do that to you) >>

Narcotics affect some people like that. Because narcotics make you feel like crap, you have a low addiction potential. People like me, on the other hand, have a high addiction potential, because narcotics like Vicodin and Percodans make me feel like a million bucks - on top of the world. No nausea at all, just euphoria and bliss (and constipation).

acetaminophen does not enhance the hydrocodone. They have separate mechanisms of analgesia. You could take maximum strength acetaminophen 650mg every 4 hours and not require any Vicodin. If you've got good kidney function and keep yourself well hydrated you could also try 1000mg acetaminophen every 6 hours. A healthy individual can handle 4g/d acetaminophen for short term pain therapy (less than a week). If you choose to use your Viodin then obviously you have to substitute Vicodin for an equal amount of plain acetaminophen. I've seen plenty of women go home after childbirth or minor gynecological operations on nothing but acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

The best way to deal with bad pain like that is to take your medicine and do something engrossing. Playing some games, watching an exciting movie or reading a good book will help greatly. the medicine will take the edge off and the mental stimulation will distract you enough that you wont be too bothered.

Keep in mind, that "engrossing" is the key term. Mindless surfing or daytime tv may not help...

acetaminophen does not enhance the hydrocodone.

What is acetaminophen and hydrocodone?
? Hydrocodone (related to codeine) is in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics. It relieves pain.
? Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of hydrocodone.
? Together, acetaminophen and hydrocodone are used to relieve moderate-to-severe pain.
? Acetaminophen and hydrocodone may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Just grabbed that off an Rx website, I was pretty sure I was right about it enhancing the effects. They may have different mechanisms of action, but it ehnances it. A beer has a different mechanism of action but would enhance the effects too, not that you should do it.

I wouldn't take the vicodin to begin with. That stuff is so addicting. I had a friend of mine get really addicted to it after a knee injury. He kept taking it for quite some time after his knee was ok. I had to take if from him and flush it down the toilet to get him to stop.

Vicodin is addictive for SOME. I have been taking vicodin off and on for three or four years for lower back (disc) pain. I am allowed to take 6/day per the prescription. A bottle of thirty, last me nearly 6 months. Each person is different. The vicodin don't make me sick either. I take them on an empty stomach if I need to and still no problems. I agree to some they can be very addictive, but for me they just take the edge off the pain and let me get on with life.

You haven't lived until you've tried Valium, just one small pill that's all it takes.

<--- is lucky Valium isn't an OTC drug here in the USA.

I once took a couple vicodin's and drank a 12-pack.... needless to say I puked that night.

And hydrocodone/hydrocodiene can be extremely fun if you know what to do with it...🙂😉

That reminds me of a comedian that said:

"I have been smoking pot all my life and I'm not addicted"

LMAO
